Double your fun at our local movie theaters

Looking for a way to escape the foggy, overcast weather for a few hours? Our local movie houses, the 4-Star Theatre and the Balboa Theater, are now both offering double features. The Balboa recently added them back into their lineup.

The 4-Star’s double feature for the next week pairs two comedies, the wildly popular “The Hangover” with “Away We Go”. The Hangover is about a group of guys who head to Vegas for a bachelor party and spend most of the movie piecing together what happened to them on the night before. It’s very funny and stars Bradley Cooper.

Away We Go, starring Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski, follows an unmarried couple who is expecting their first child travel as they travel around the U.S. to find a perfect place to start their family. Of course along the way, they have some misadventures.

See these two fun flicks for $9.00, or just $7 for a bargain matinee or if you’re over 65. The 4-Star Theatre is located at Clement & 23rd Avenue. Check 4-Star showtimes

The Balboa Theater, located at 38th Avenue and Balboa, is going all out with two sets of double features. The first pairs Captain Abu Raed with Moon. Abu Raed is the story of a lonely janitor at Amman’s International Airport, who one day finds a a discarded Captain’s hat in the trash at work. He is followed by a neighborhood boy who spots him wearing it as he walks home and the next morning he wakes up to find a group of neighborhood children at his door, believing him to be an airline pilot. And thus the friendship begins.

Moon is a sci-fi story about astronaut Sam Bell, who is living on the far side of the moon, completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine Earth’s primary source of energy, Helium-3. But before he can finish and return home to his Earth family in a few weeks, his health starts to deteriorate. Roger Ebert says “Moon is a superior example of that threatened genre, hard science-fiction, which is often about the interface between humans and alien intelligence of one kind of or other, including digital”.

The second double feature at the Balboa is Cheri with Food, Inc. Cheri stars Michelle Pfeiffer who in this seductive and sensational tale, stars as a ravishing Parisian courtesan who takes a naïve young man half her age—rising British star Rupert Friend—into her boudoir to teach him a thing or two about women.

In Food, Inc. filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that’s been hidden from the American consumer. Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield Farm’s Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms’ Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising–and often shocking truths–about what we eat, how it’s produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

Admission prices at the Balboa are also $9.00, $6.50 for bargain matinees. And if it’s your birthday, you get in FREE! I love that. :) Check Balboa showtimes

And of course, both movie theaters are surrounded by a variety of restaurants. The Balboa Theater even has a handy local restaurant guide on their website. So why not escape this dreary weather for awhile and make a night or an afternoon out of it? Don’t forget the popcorn.

Bike Share system demo in GGP this Sunday

This Sunday in Golden Gate Park, City Car Share and the SFMTA are hosting a demonstration of a potential bicycle sharing system for San Francisco residents.

The event is being co-hosted with Bixi, Montreal’s popular bike-sharing system. Bixi riders can purchase memberships or pay as they go to rent bicycles from 300 stations throughout the city. Pick up a bike at one location, drop it off at another, 24 hours a day. There are currently 3,000 bicycles in the Montreal Bixi system.

In Montreal, Bixi fees include a base bike rental fee (either an annual or monthly subscription or pay $5 for the day) plus incremental usage fees based on 30 minute periods. More info on Bixi Montreal pricing here

At Sunday’s event, you can test ride the bikes and learn more about this new mode of urban transportation that City Car Share is considering for San Francisco.

Through this event, City CarShare hopes to encourage awareness and spur conversation about a bike sharing network in San Francisco. They will also be surveying participants at the event for feedback.

The demonstration will be held at the City CarShare tent in Golden Gate Park just inside the car-free Sunday road closure on JFK Drive at Conservatory Drive. Drop by between 10am and 3:30pm to take a bike for a spin.

What do you all think? Does a system like this have potential for San Francisco? How would you use it if at all?

Police Blotter – July 31, 2009

[Reprinted from The Richmond Police Station Newsletter of July 31, 2009. To be added to their mailing list, email the station at sfpd.richmond.station@sfgov.org or visit their website.]

CAPTAIN RICHARD CORREIA’S MESSAGE
Since the first of the year officers have been focusing traffic enforcement efforts in response to your complaints about particular problems as well as at locations that we know to be especially dangerous. In June officers issued 500 citations for moving violations and our speed indicator trailer was deployed daily around the District. I am delighted to report to you that the number of injury traffic collisions has declined rather precipitously in the last two months. At the end of April we stood at 108 injury accidents for the year, an average of 27 per month. In May the number of collisions declined to 19 and in June there were 12.

Reports of robberies and burglaries are both lower in the month of June.

There were 12 robberies in April, 16 in May and 8 in June. These incidents, mainly street robberies, have been occurring throughout the district and at times ranging from mid-afternoon to the late evening. These crimes tend to occur on streets immediately adjacent to Geary Boulevard and victims are usually walking alone. These robberies are most often perpetrated by two or more suspects. The suspects seem drawn to victims who are listening to music on earphones or talking on a cell phone, likely because they can sneak up on the victim without being heard.

In June of 2008 there were 24 burglaries in the District. The three-month trend is as follows: 30 burglaries in April, 32 in May and 14 in June. If you see anyone suspicious in your neighborhood, please call the police immediately. Remember most residential burglaries are committed in the daytime hours and often no force is used to gain entry. I encourage you to contact San Francisco Safety Awareness for Everyone (SFSAFE) to learn how you can protect your home from being burglarized. Telephone SAFE at 415.553.1984 or visit their website at http://sfsafe.org.

The King Tut exhibit opened recently at the deYoung Museum. We had anticipated significant traffic problems due to the exhibit; however, it seems that with tickets being sold for particular admission times, traffic is spread out more evenly over the entire day. Public transportation is still recommended since the museum’s garage fills to capacity by mid-morning most days and there is very little street parking.

The increase in summer visitors to the Academy of Sciences and the de Young Museum has not slipped the attention of auto burglars, who are especially active in Golden Gate Park between Arguello and Crossover drive. We had 92 auto burglaries in April, 59 in May and 69 in June.

On July 25, 2009 Richmond officers’ working in plain clothes staked out a car at Middle Drive and Bowling Green Drive in Golden Gate Park. There were several items of value in the car, including, a backpack, computer and an IPOD. The officers knew from experience that an auto burglar would find the car an appealing target. Indeed, several hours into the stakeout an individual burglarized the car, and he was immediately arrested. A subsequent search of the suspect turned up evidence from a theft committed nearby earlier in the day and narcotics. The suspect, who has been arrested forty-nine times, including thirty-one times for felonies, was booked for burglary, possession of stolen property, theft and a narcotics violation. This individual is likely responsible for several auto burglaries daily.

During the past week, there were 17 traffic accidents, 2 involving injuries. There were also 2 arrests for driving under the influence.

NOTEWORTHY ARRESTS
On 07/23/09 at 6:30 am a vehicle was stopped at the intersection of Arguello Boulevard and Geary Boulevard for a speeding violation. A computer check revealed that the driver had an expired license. The Driver was arrested, cited, and released on scene. The vehicle was towed per the vehicle code.

The arrest was taken from the USF officers and the suspect was booked at Richmond Station.

On 07/25/09 at 3:35 pm officers working the plain clothes unit were tasked to monitor the increasing auto boosting incidents within the Richmond District. They concentrated their efforts inside Golden Gate Park where they saw an individual burglarize a vehicle. The suspect was booked on felony burglary charges and for possession of narcotic paraphernalia.

On 07/25/09 at 7:47 pm a vehicle was stopped at the intersection of Geary Boulevard and Collins for not having license plates. A computer check revealed that the driver had an expired license. The Driver was arrested, cited, and released on scene. The vehicle was towed per the vehicle code.

The suspect was arrested and booked for a felony charge of inflicting injury upon a cohabitee.

On 07/26/09 at approximately 2:40 pm officers responded to the area of Sacramento Street and Walnut Street regarding a burglary in progress. Officers detained a suspect at UCSF, located at 3333 California Street that matched the suspect’s description. A search of the suspect revealed various stolen items including a laptop, cell phones, cut up credit cards, checks, and various burglary tools. Also during the search, an ankle tracking device was discovered on the suspect and officers determined that the suspect was on parole. An employee of the store positively identified the laptop found on the suspect as their property. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the suspect also broke into two other adjacent offices in the area. The suspect was arrested and booked for charges, including burglary, possession of stolen property and a violation of parole.

On 07/28/09 at 7:44 am a vehicle was stopped at the intersection of Geary Boulevard and 6th Avenue for a red light violation. A computer check revealed that the driver had an expired license. The Driver was arrested, cited, and released on scene. The vehicle was towed per the vehicle code.

On 07/28/09 at 9:44 am officers responded to the 3700 Block of Balboa Street regarding a vehicle collision. A computer check revealed that the driver had an expired license. The Driver was arrested, cited, and released on scene. The vehicle was towed per the vehicle code.

On 07/28/09 at 10:59 pm officers stopped a vehicle for a license plate violation. Upon making contact with the driver, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanated from the driver’s breath. The driver exhibited physical and motor behavior consistent with that of an intoxicated person. A field sobriety test was conducted and the driver was unable to perform any of the tests. A Preliminary Alcohol Screen (PAS) test was conducted and the driver was determined to have alcohol in his system in excess of the lawful limit. The driver was arrested and a computer check revealed that the driver had a suspended out of state driver’s license. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

NOTEWORTHY INCIDENTS
On 07/23/09 at 4pm a homeless victim was attacked by while sleeping in the bus shelter at Cabrillo Street and 48th Avenue. The victim was transported by ambulance to the VA Hospital. A search of the area for the suspect was conducted with negative results.

The victim stated that someone unlawfully entered their business and stole a laptop from their 3rd floor office. The victim said the incident was captured on their video surveillance system and an unknown suspect wearing a baseball cap, dark sunglasses, white T-shirt and blue jeans was seen entering and leaving their office.

On 07/25/09 at 3:37 pm officers responded to the 5000 Block of Geary Boulevard regarding a fight. The investigation revealed that a fight occurred at the sidewalk and that an unknown suspect had pushed the other party against a vehicle, causing minor damages to the side of the vehicle. The suspect stated that he saw numerous unknown males fighting on the sidewalk on 14th Avenue near Geary Boulevard and that he attempted to break it up. The suspect was cited and released on scene.

On 07/29/09 at 3:40 am officers responded to Fulton and 28th Avenue regarding an auto burglary and detained 3 male juveniles. A had witness heard glass shattering and saw the 3 suspects acting suspiciously next to a Ford Mustang. The witness yelled at the juveniles and the juveniles ran towards the park. One of the suspects returned to the vehicle after two minutes and entered the rear passenger door of the same vehicle. The witness yelled at the suspect again and the suspect fled towards the park. The juvenile suspects said they were walking down Fulton from a friend’s house and, being bored, attempted to get into a vehicle that had a broken window but they were unable to gain entry. One of the juveniles said he wanted to see how it was like to break a vehicle window so he used a rock to smash the rear passenger side window. The juvenile that smashed the window was cited and released to his father. The other two juveniles were admonished and released to their parents. An attempt to locate the owner of the vehicle had negative results.

Richmond Police have an arson suspect in custody

Just got the Richmond Police newsletter for this week and it opens with news related to the car fires that have been set in San Francisco this week (including two in the Richmond):

“On July 30, 2009 at about 3:00 AM, alert Richmond Station plain clothes officers spotted a wanted arson suspect near the Great Highway. The officers were in the area due to several recent incidents where vehicles had been intentionally set on fire. The investigation of those recent incidents has been assigned to the Arson Detail. Investigators will be looking for connections between the suspect we arrested and unsolved, intentionally set fires in the City.

Let’s hope this is the guy/gal and that we’re done with car torchings. Whatever the outcome, nice work Richmond District PD.

The winning love letter to the Richmond

Back in June, I told you about 7×7 magazine’s contest that invited SF locals to write love letters to their neighborhood. The inner and outer Richmond received some great entries.

This week, 7×7′s first-ever neighborhoods issue hit the newstands. Below is the winning love letter for the Richmond District. Congratulations to author and Richmond romantic, Carol Weinstein.

===================================================

I can’t believe I’m actually writing this to you—I mean, we’ve been together so long, and we never say it to each other. My family has been with you for more than 80 years, and you and me, we’ve got our own long-term relationship: 46 years so far. What is that? You say I was gone for 17 of those years? True, but I never really left you behind. The strings you had attached to my heart just became taut with the distance. When I came home, I was still trying to avoid looking into your salty, foggy face. I tried to move to the Mission. I see you getting overcast on me. Look, the Mission is hot and spicy, and you know I love hot and spicy. Of course, everyone wanted the hot and spicy Mission. I got lost in the sunny streets and crowds of hipster transplants, and stumbled back into your windy avenues like a sleepwalker. When we were kids, bodysurfing off China Beach, we swam out into the waves and then gave in, letting them pull us back to the sand. We climbed out onto the beach, breathless and blue-lipped from the cold, only to turn around and run back into the water. We only ran back in because we had unquestioning faith that we would once again be returned to shore. Just like I know that you will always pull me back to your hills and wind and 5 p.m. fog. I know that you’ll never let me go, because you love me and I love you. There. I said it.

Behind the scenes at Musee d’Orsay tomorrow night

Jill at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park tipped me off to a special event tomorrow night.

On Friday night, Guy Cogeval, the President of the Musee d’Orsay in Paris is speaking at 7pm on “Sneak Peek — Behind the Scenes at the Musee d’Orsay.” He’ll discuss the upcoming renovation of the Musee as well as the two special exhibitions coming to the de Young next summer – Birth of Impressionism and Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne and Beyond. The de Young will be the only museum in the world to receive both of them.

The lecture is free. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

SFBG Best of the Bay – what happened, Richmond?

So I was all excited to dive into the SF Bay Guardian’s annual “Best of the Bay 2009″ list tonight, confident that our great neighborhood with all its character, fabulous restaurants and history would be well represented. Well, how should I say this… WHERE WERE WE RICHMOND?

I mean really, we didn’t even snag a throwaway category like best magician?!

Apparently, we’re only the best neighborhood for things like public pools, parks, sunsets, all of which is very, very nice. San Franciscans, please visit us anytime for these lovely attractions!

On an encouraging yet slightly depressing note, we did sweep in the crucial category of love drama. If you want to break up with someone, the best spot is The Bitter End pub on Clement. And then if you decide to try and work it out, we also are home to the best couples counselor.

The venerable Green Apple Bookstore made the list (always well deserved) but other than the Academy of Sciences (which is on every list these days, snooze), we really didn’t have anything notable to contribute. Really? Not even a single restaurant?

Or maybe it’s the SFBG that needs to do better. Need I remind them that when their trademark van was stolen, it was recovered right here in the Richmond? I think that deserves a BEST right there. ;)

Below are the Richmond District places that did make the list. See the full list of Best of the Bay winners here.
