“Eats” on Clement taken over by Burma Superstar

Examiner.com reports today that the owners of Burma Superstar and B Star Bar are enlarging their Clement Street empire by taking over Eats on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Clement.

The new owners will keep the Eats name but will serve up their Pan Asian take on breakfast. The B Star Bar has had a popular brunch for awhile now so perhaps their brunch menu will be used in the Eats location. Pulled pork bun sliders, anyone?

The new Eats, with its new menu, should be back open for business in a couple of weeks. Truth be told, I’m sorry to see Eats go. Sniff sniff.

  1. John Said,

Oh no!!! I love that place. In fact me and friend walked there for breakfast only to find it closed. I’m not a happy camper. :(

  2. Victoria Said,

Noooooooooooo! I love Eats. It is probably one of the best breakfast/brunch places in our neighborhood. Furthermore, doesn’t it creep anyone else out that the Burma Superstar people will now own three restaurants within a two or three block radius? If it was a large corporation, we wouldn’t let them do this…

    R.I.P. Eats!

  3. Sus Said,

What??? Not to knock either of those places, but why does there need to be a third one literally across the street?!? I’m with Victoria on this one…

  4. Rachel Said,

That’s a bummer. Eats wasn’t the best, but the neighborhood really needed another breakfast place besides Q. Hopefully the Burma Star folks will do a good job.

  5. Bob Said,

Agree, we need more greasy spoon breakfast joints. Sorry to see this one go. Hopefully B-Star Breakfast, or whatever they name it, will keep some of these staples and not turn the place into a breakfast joint for hipsters. Thank goodness for throw-back places like Bill’s and Louis’.

  6. Jane Said,

Loved their ricotta cheese pancakes. As a non-asian living in the Richmond, can we pleez have some more “American” restaurants. Nothing against asian food, just want something else once in awhile.

  7. HC Said,

@Jane – Clement Ave is a primarily Asian neighborhood, aka “The New Chinatown”. But within the last couple of years, more “American” restaurants have been cropping up and the neighborhood in undergoing some gentrification (like the Mission District). I am sad to see this gradual change as San Francisco is known for its pockets of ethnic neighborhoods. That being said, there are plenty of American restaurants within walking distance or a short bus ride away.

  8. Bob Said,

Let’s not kid ourselves….B-Star Enterprises is adding to the gentrification as their clientelle is primarily non-asian, despite the pan asian focus.

  9. Alexei Said,

There’s some sort of American (I think) place being installed on California between 5th and 6th, replacing a sushi restaurant.

  10. The 419 King Said,

This is no loss. For “American” food, it was a pretty shabby excuse.

Besides, mini-franchises are an SF restaurant tradition.

  11. Michael Said,

Give it a rest with the American and Asian labeling… and put away the gentrification finger pointing they have Huevos Rancheros on their brunch menu amongst other things. There is nothing wrong with simple multiculturalism, it is what this country is founded on. After all, when I can eat at 5 or more Pho restaurants or an even larger number of Sushi restaurants in a two block radius it is time for more variety.

  12. Edwin Heaven Said,

RIP Eats. Your ricotta pancakes, thin crisp bacon and eggs perfectly prepared will be sorely missed. The new owners should call it Cheats and not Eats because San Francisco has been cheated of its best breakfast experience.

  13. michelle Said,

do we really know what is going to be served or just a bunch of rumors being spread around????

i have live on clement and 2nd avenue for the last 8 years and probably eaten at eats 5-6 times. the food at eats sucked; menu never change, greasy, oily, boring, always smell like food when i leave the place, nothing hasnt been updated in the last 8 + years. main reason why people go to eats is because its cheap, cheap and cheap. wouldnt be surprised if owners sold the restaurant because they were not making money for such grueling work.

as for the labeling of “american food”, what is so american about huevo rachero, teriyaki chicken, etc…????

i hope new owners will do a good job, i hope they will keep it breakfast.

  14. richie Said,

Superstar’s staff said, Eat’s will be kept as “American Breakfast”. Yeah!!! What to serve for evenings is not yet decided, maybe tacos. jan. 16, 2010

  15. premkumar Said,

I really like Burma Superstar, and B Star. Mike from B Star said “Eat’s will be remain as breakfast, lunch and brunch…and will be nothing like B Star or Burma SuperStar…”. Eat’s already looks very very different, I hope they will do a good job with the food.

  17. Eric Mar Said,

Living on 2nd Ave down the street from the early 80′s-2000 I grew up eating at EATS and will miss the old place. But the new owners have done a tremendous job with the new EATS. The prices don’t seem that different and there are some great new items on the menu. I hope our community continues to support EATS, Hamburger Haven and other key breakfast places on Clement.

  18. Coot Said,

Simple American food only a few blocks away??? Oh yeah, that’s right, a KFC and a Jack in the Box. Unless you consider dim sum simple American food.
