Clam Chowder and other seafood delights coming to GGP

EaterSF reports that in addition to waffles coming to Golden Gate Park, we’ll also be getting fed by Sam’s Chowdermobile as soon as this Friday:

Sam’s Chowdermobile had its food truck permit approved. Starting this Friday through Sunday, they’ll be dishing out lobster rolls, clam chowder and fish tacos behind the band shell near the de Young from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Sam’s Chowdermobile comes from Sam’s Chowder House in Half Moon Bay. The menu on board includes chowder ($5), fish tacos ($5), fried calamari ($7), BBQ pulled pork
sandwich ($7), french fries and more.

Also on the menu: their Sam’s Famous Maine Lobster Roll ($15) and Lobster Roll “Shortie” ($10), selected as one of the top 5 “Best Sandwiches in America” by NBC’s Today Show.

After this weekend they’ll likely keep the same schedule in the park, but check their schedule out on Twitter just to be safe.

Who’s hungry?

Sutro Baths lithograph sells at auction for $27k

Sutro Baths has long faded into the history books of San Francisco and the Richmond District, but that doesn’t mean it’s not still a hot piece of property.

CurbedSF reports that Christie’s recently auctioned off a 79 x 82 inch color lithograph from 1896 for a mere $27,500. The auction house originally estimated it would sell for between $12,000 and $18,000.

With its vivid colors and wonderful detail, this rare color lithograph recalls the energy and excitement that surely pervaded this impressive complex. Grand in promotion as well as scale, the Sutro Baths were advertised by large billboards such as this monumental work, composed of six individually printed pieces, which have been assembled in registration and glued together to form the final work.

So if you’ve got old Richmond District memorabilia in your closet, hang onto it! You may be surprised at its value someday.

Group working to bring a Farmer’s market to the Richmond

The Richmond District is full of produce markets, but only a few sell organic fruits and vegetables. To remedy that, a group of residents is trying to get a regular Farmer’s market going in the neighborhood.

Calling themselves “Richmond District Greens”, the organizers have set up a Yahoo! Group to share ideas and plan meetings. They’ve met several times already and are working with heads of local merchant assocations and other interested residents and business owners.

They have also been in touch with Urban Village-Farmer’s Market Association, who operate 11 farmers’ markets offering organic or at least no-spray produce, as well as Pacific Coast Farmers Market Association which runs the Sunset District’s year-round Sunday market at 9th & Irving.

Some of the early locations under discussion/investigation include Lincoln Park, St. Anne’s home at Lake and 3rd Avenue, and Presidio Middle School.

If you’re interested in helping with the effort, join the Yahoo! Group. They plan to meet again in early July.

Good luck to the group! I would love to see a weekly farmer’s market in the Richmond. Would you?

Community survey

Our friends over at the Richmond District Neighborhood Center are running a community survey to assess the needs of adults in our area.

RDNC Coordinator Mila Diaz says the survey information will be used to determine what the Richmond District has, where we are duplicating services and where people have needs that are not being met. The RDNC will also be holding focus groups and interviews as part of the research.

The results will then be shared with Richmond District community based organizations as well as our neighborhood Merchant Associations.

To participate, click one of the links below. Your responses are anonymous and it takes just a few minutes to complete the survey.

“Seedstore” coming to Clement Street

This weekend I noticed papered windows and a sign at 212 Clement announcing that “Seedstore” will be opening soon. According to their window sign and blog, Seedstore will be selling men’s and women’s clothing and vintage goods:

We’ve been hunting and gathering…all for you! We’ve collected a well curated assortment of clothing, accessories, and goods we’re almost ready to share. Our space should be “ready to shop” by early August 2010

According to their Facebook page, they plan to operate Monday through Thursday from 11 to 7, Friday and Saturday from 11 to 8, and Sundays from 11 to 6. They’re on the same block as Park Life so they’re in good retail company.

You can also follow them on Twitter. Good luck to Seedstore!

Hundreds participate in “Slash Oil” protest at Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach was abuzz this morning as people gathered for the “Slash Oil” initiative. Nearly 500 people showed up to lie down to call attention to the gulf oil spill. At 11:25am, a helicopter circled overhead to take our picture. I was in the “L”.

Slash Oil was organized by San Francisco writer / activist / taxi driver Brad Newsham as part of a larger initiative that took place today called Hands Across the Sand, a national movement to oppose offshore oil drilling and champion clean energy and renewables.

After forming the slash oil symbol, participants walked down to the water’s edge and spread out across the shoreline holding hands, while the helicopter continued taking pictures. People also joined hands at the shore along Crissy Field.

See more aerial photos here

People attended Slash Oil from all over the Bay Area. I spoke to two women who drove down from Santa Rosa, while others near me came up from the peninsula. Code Pink also attended, providing hot pink fabric that was used to form the slash.

The event got some real street cred when Frank Chu and his notorious sign showed up. He seems to like the laid back protests – we last saw him out here for the sit/lie protest earlier this year. One reader told that Frank refused to sit or lie down while the helicopter was overhead. FAIL, Frank.

Lemonade in the fog

A little Richmond District fog didn’t deter these young entrepeneurs from setting up their lemonade stand today. On the menu: lemonade, vegan cookies and regular cookies. Delicious!
