Muriel Leff Park continues improvements; seeks board members

Located in back of the Richmond District Police Station on 7th Avenue near Geary, tiny Muriel Leff Park is an oasis where you can sit under a tree and enjoy the afternoon sunshine. Kids may play in the sandbox nearby and it’s not unusual to see someone catching a snooze on one of the benches.

It’s one of the least known parks in the neighborhood, but under the leadership of new Neighborhood Parks Council coordinator Matt Silva, the park is getting some much needed attention.

Since taking on the role as Outreach Coordinator, Silva has organized a couple of community workdays, the most recent one on May 22 when neighbors and Rec & Park staff gathered to paint the wood structures in the park.

As support for the park increases, so too do people’s enthusiasm for sprucing it up. Silva has a few suggested improvements on deck that he wants to hear about from the community.

The first was painting the park structures (DONE!). Others include installing solar-powered lampposts to increase the lighting and replace the rusted posts.

Another idea is to install a small Zen garden, which community member Ihsan Dujaili came up with because he loves the park’s “quietness and lack of traffic”.

To move these and other ideas forward, Matt is looking for a few good neighbors to join the Muriel Leff Mini Park board:

We need your help! We’re looking for 3-5 people to step in as members of the Muriel Leff Mini Park board to help us continue to improve the park. The time commitment is minimal (perhaps a few hours per month) and the impact will be great!

If you’re interested in helping out, contact Matt Silva at msilva@sfnpc.org. Or if you just want to keep up with the park and upcoming events, sign up on the Friends of Muriel Leff Park website.

Thanks to Matt and the neighbors who have helped keep Muriel Leff Park looking so good.
