Mysterious booms heard early Sunday morning

I got an email today from a Richmond resident who lives on 2nd Avenue:

About 5am this morning my entire family and I were awoken by extremely loud BOOMS that went on for at least ten times. The police had no information but others did report it.

Another resident who lives on 8th Avenue reported hearing several of the booms as well.

There’s no official explanation yet but Hugh of ob-kc.com had this to say on twitter:

Anyone else hear them? Any idea what it was? Leave a comment.

  1. I was awake for a few mins and I heard the “booms” as well. They sounded like gun shots. Did you get anymore information on it?

  2. I heard it!!! I heard it!!! It was loud and to me, it sounded like someone was shooting up in the air….I heard it at least 7times. My husband called the police and they said that other people who lives around 3rd/Anza already reported it. I live around 2nd avenue and it sounded like it was one block away…..

  3. I’m often up at night and hear the odd boom not infrequently, and I’ve always been curious.

  4. This MAY be unrelated, but…

last night around 4:30am my wife heard these loud booms. she was totally freaked out – had no clue what it was. thought it might be gunshots or someone breaking into a house. she looks out her window and here’s what it was….

the paper boy. throwing the Sunday edition against peoples’ garage doors.

    toss….BOOM…..
    toss….BOOM…..
    toss….BOOM…..

    funny. YMMV. 🙂

  5. Yeah, I heard these too. Did not sound like gun shots to me. I think it was seven that I heard as well. (Anza/Arguello).

  6. There are so many booms in the lower avenues it’s akin to car alarms…..if somebody did get shot nobody would respond. Booms, shots, fireworks, whatever, it’s commonplace.

I think there’s a guy who needs to know about these sounds, and other crazy stuff happening in this district. His name is Eric Mar.

  7. Yes, I heard them as well. They happen once or twice a year, since I have lived at 10th and Balboa. Not sure if they are gunshots, they sound like large fireworks/cherry bombs.

The sound seems to come from the East, over on 9th or 8th Ave.

  8. I heard loud booms just like that on Thursday or Friday morning around 3AM at Sutro Heights park. It went off about 10 times and I know that some idiot enjoys firing off fireworks in my area. Once I heard the fourth one, I called the cops.

  9. I *saw* Chinese dancers w/firecrackers dancing and using their drums in a truck around 11am. Might there have been some sort of celebration early in the morning?

  10. We hear the booms at Ocean Beach. Sounds like someone walking down Balboa shooting off some kind of very powerful fireworks. Some times 3AM sometimes earlier like last night 10:30 PM or so. Or it could be Sutro Park and the sound is distorted. Sometimes sounds like it could be a gun……but it has been going on for a long time.

  11. I heard ’em too. Also, en route to the bus this morning, noticed an empty cardboard box at the curb of Geary/5th, labeled as having once contained 10 (apparently large) roman candle type fireworks.

I suspect that might have had something to do with it. Sad that along with the noise pollution, whoever was responsible also had to litter the street rather than putting their trash somewhere more appropriate.

  12. Live a few blocks from Land’s End, and heard these booms as well. GF woke me up after hearing them, so seems that these must have been the Sutro Heights fireworks people are talking about.

  13. Witnessed the booms visually. Perp was up on Sutro Heights and was tossing what *felt* like quarter sticks of dynamite off towards the Cliff House.

  14. Don’t think these have a connect, but the other week there were few consecutive nights where a couple of kids were lighting of rather large fireworks around 15/16th and California. Highly doubt that the sound would carry as far as 2nd but it seemed like a mix of exploding and airborne ones. Maybe they moved down the block?

  15. Heard what sounded like gun shots or fire works early (still dark) Sunday morning, several in succession. Arguello @ Cabrillo.

  16. I heard them down on 38th and Fulton. It sounded extremely close, like down the block from me. I heard it about 4 or 5 times around 4am. There were a bunch of sirens immediately afterwards, but they didn’t go on long. I called the cops and they said that others had reported it and to just stay inside my house. Definitely sounded like gun fire to me.
