Power to the Peaceful music festival in Golden Gate Park this Saturday

If Outside Lands tickets were a little out of your price range, then you might find this weekend’s free Power to the Peaceful music festival more to your liking.

Put on by musician Michael Franti (“Say Hey, I Love You”, “Sound of Sunshine”), the festival brings together world music, art, the environment, technology and much more to Golden Gate Park’s Speedway Meadow (map).

The lineup on Saturday includes headliners Michael Franti & Spearhead along with American Idol finalist Crystal Bowersox, Rebelution, Sellassie, Rupa & The April Fishes, Loco Bloco, Rhonda Nicole, and SambaDa.

You can also enjoy plenty of spinning in the DJ Tent, as well as dozens of food, social and environmental vendors. Other highlights include parkour demos and for the early risers, free yoga in the park at 9am.

While the Golden Gate Park portion of the festival only happens on Saturday, there are several other festival events during the weekend that take place at the Fillmore on Geary.

On Friday night, Michael Franti will perform an acoustic version of his new album, “The Sound of Sunshine” with special guests (8pm, tickets). On Saturday, Franti will host an official afterparty featuring The Rocking Heads (9pm, tickets). And on Sunday, Franti offers a special event for families – a matinee concert where he will play along with Blue Bear Youth Band (4pm, tickets).

I like Franti’s music a lot – you’ve probably heard it if you’ve watched any of the Sunday Streets videos I’ve posted here on the blog. So much of his music is smile-inducing. 🙂
