Dog theft at 7th Avenue Safeway has a happy ending

Here’s a story that will make you go “Awww…”, courtesy of the Examiner.

A couple of weeks ago, Amit Gadhia stopped in to shop at the Safeway on 7th Avenue and Cabrillo. Before going inside, he tied up his 2-year-old Maltese dog, Ozzy, outside. After finishing his shopping, he came outside and Ozzy was nowhere to be found. The fuzzy rocker had been dog-napped.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Gadhia said. “Right there from in front of the store. I thought, ‘I’ve got to do something about this.’”

Gadhia sprung into action, papering the neighborhood with flyers and asking neighbors to help find Ozzy. Finally, someone told him about a video they’d seen on YouTube. The video was of Ozzy with a red bow on his head and a description that read, “My new dog Biggy Smalls… My boy friend found him and he’s adorable.”

The sticky-fingered boyfriend is Tony Du, 19, who was subsequently arrested on a grand theft charge after Richmond District police tracked him down. They recovered Ozzy, who had been renamed and was living with a pit bull.

Police them summoned Gadhia to the station, and surprised him with a reunion with Ozzy. “It was the happiest day of my life,” Gadhia said. “I thought I was fighting a losing battle.”

  1. Simon Said,

Aw so glad for this guy. I saw him last week plastering the neighborhood he looked so distraught. How messed up some punk would do such a thing. Yay for karma and Ozzy! Good things happen to good people, proof is in the pudding.

  2. animal Said,

Thanks in part to social networks where people want to show off their new wares, the doggy was found. Unfortunately, people steal anything that’s not bolted down. Myna92 needs to dump Du ASAP!

  3. njudah Said,

I’m glad the little dog was found! So sad when a dog gets stolen or missing! But people do need to be careful with any dog, big or small, when tying them up to go inside a store.

Some dogs get really scared when there’s lots of people (and dogs) walking by. Or some mean person like in this case steals the little dog. Best thing to do is make sure your dog is ok with it, and to not leave them away too long or out of site. Dogs are awesome and it’s up to us dog “parents” to make sure they’re safe!

  4. animal Said,

Looks like there’s an interesting thread on YouTube. Myna92, the recipient of the dog, claims it was stray, and said the Examiner story is wrong.

  5. Steve Said,

Very happy to hear the dog is back to his rightful owner. As for Myna92, looks like she has turned the the video private. Though, I do love this one comment left by a user: “He looks like? he belonged to someone-so? tame :)

  6. animal Said,

I’m not surprised she turned that video private, perhaps advised by legal counsel to do so. That thread could end up in court, with her dude facing felony charges, and her as an accomplice and/or recipient of stolen property. Yup, that first comment (“He looks like he belonged to someone-so tame“) before Du was busted is the most incriminating.
