Fatal bicyclist vs. MUNI accident on 6th Avenue

Shortly before 5pm this evening, a 44 O’Shaughnessy MUNI bus collided with a cyclist on 6th Avenue between Clement and Geary. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

It’s still unclear what caused the collision. Per MUNI procedure, the bus driver has been put on paid leave while the accident is investigated.

SFCitizen was on the scene and snapped photos of the grisly accident. SFAppeal also has photos from the accident. Video below from KCBS.

Apparently a tow truck had to be called to lift up the front of the bus so the cyclist’s body could be removed. Police held up white sheets on the scene to prevent onlookers from viewing the removal.

Investigators kept the block of 6th Avenue between Clement and Geary closed to traffic during the investigation. The 44 line was rerouted to 7th Avenue during the closure.

  1. As usual, SFHaters have nasty things to say about this tragedy. What we need now is peace.

I hope when the ghost bike arrives, somebody will arrange a vigil and have Eric Mar say some words. When Yannick Linke was killed at Masonic/Turk less than two short months ago, Ross Mirkarimi and others spoke at the vigil.

It’s very sad that a life has ended, and that the Richmond District will host the ghost bike, too soon after the previous bicycle fatality.

  2. Most unfortunate, but if it teaches other cyclists to mend their reckless ways, show courtesy to others, and accept the cold, hard fact that stop signs and red lights are for them, too, then it will have been worth it. And please, there’s enough clutter on the sidewalks, we don’t need another “Ghost Bike” blocking the way.

  3. Don’t expect supervisor Mar to be there with the lame ghost bike. He OD’ed on Happy Meals.

  4. Why the rude comments? Someone died. We don’t know who was at fault yet, but either way, a young person died last night.

  5. @ Rachel- well said. When it comes to bikes and cars it does not feel there is a middle ground. It’s time to press the captain for a pedestrian AND bycyle safety campaign. Instead of zooming in the car right by violators, if officers are talking to people and writing some warnings and citations all around- perhaps awareness will be raised beyond what the “ghost bike” can accomplish. There’s plenty of chances to slam Mr Mar, no need to aim a volley at him before we even get to the memorial. Just plain sad

  6. I agree with Rachel. Lew Ernick stop being a jerk !! A young man died, have some respect you prick !!

  7. That young man was my friend’s only child. Anger and rude comments have no place here. Let there be some consideration, some holy silence, so that reason may prevail and the hole where a mother’s heart once beat can begin its journey of grief and healing.
