Get your spook on: Halloween events in the Richmond District

If you and the kids are looking for fun Halloween events this year, look no further than your own neighborhood. Below is a list of spooktacular events planned at various spots in the Richmond District (and one at the Zoo which sounds cool).

If you know of other Halloween events going on in our neighborhood, leave a comment and I’ll add it.

Happy Halloween!

Boo at the Zoo | October 30 & 31, 10am – 4pm | SF Zoo, Sloat Blvd. & Great Highway
Come walk the Haunted Nature Trail, explore your way out of the Rainforest Maze Adventure, trick-or-treat throughout the Zoo and more. Check out Puppet Art Theater and Witch Hazelnut’s spooky stories, make some scary crafts and even see some “creepy” critters during this “spook-tacular” event. Plus, you won’t want to miss seeing the Zoo’s animals enjoy some special treats of their own during the Pumpkin “Stomp ‘n Chomp.” Free with paid admission to the Zoo. Note: The Zoo requests that trick-or-treaters not wear rubber masks as they may frighten the animals.

SuperNatural Festival at the California Academy of Sciences | October 30, 9:30am – 5pm & October 31, 11am – 5pm | Golden Gate Park
Celebrate Halloween with chills and thrills at the Academy! Enjoy ghoulish music by 102.1 KDFC and Radio Disney, join a costume parade, watch Farmer Mike artistically carve a giant 300 pound pumpkin, or delight in performances by Velocity Circus, magicians, and more! The family fun continues with cockroaches, snakes, and other creepy crawly critters during live animal demonstrations and special programs. Be one of the first 2,000 visitors to come in costume on Oct 30 and get a free reusable trick or treat bag! Free with general admission ticket to the Academy.

“The Many Haunts of the Richmond District” @ the Richmond District Neighborhood Center
October 31, 12pm – 3:30pm | 741 30th Avenue

The Multicultural Children’s Arts Program presents this free Halloween festival for the whole family. Come to the Neighborhood Center in costume and enjoy arts and crafts, cupcake decorating, games, a haunted house, a craft bazaar and much more! For more info, call 751-6600.

Haunted House at Appel & Dietrich Market | October 31, after dark | 6001 California Street
An annual tradition, this free haunted house is put on by neighborhood residents in the basement of the market at California St. & 22nd Avenue. Start your spooky journey with a trip down a dark slide, then prepare to be scared! I had a blast at last year’s themed house, “Feary Tales”. You can see some footage from it in the video above.

Haunted House at Frankenart Mart | October 31, 5pm – 9pm | 515 Balboa Street
This Halloween, Frankenart is having a haunted house, and as always, everyone is invited to come and help us scare the crap out of all the toddlers in the neighborhood. That’s right, Baby Batman, we’re back. We’re planning on a fairly classic haunted house – Frankenstein, Dracula, Werewolves, Mummies, fog machines and the like. Free.
