Police arrest Russian Hill murder suspect at Sutro Heights Park

Today, prosecutors charged Gary Scott Holland, 43, for the murder of Kathleen Horan in her Russian Hill apartment last week.

Holland, who is already on parole for attempted murder in Fresno County, was charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted rape, one count of residential robbery and two counts of residential burglary. Police say he posed as a utility worker to gain entry into Kathleen Horan’s apartment around 7pm last Thursday night.

On Friday morning around 10am, the SFPD held a press conference in connection with the case. At the same time, just across town, Richmond District police officers were patrolling Sutro Heights Park and noticed a man lying on the ground in the bushes, overlooking the ocean. The SF Examiner reports:

Richmond Station Capt. Richard Corriea and two other officers, Officer Francis Feliciano and Lt. Mark Mahoney, saw Holland on the ground at Sutro Heights Park, located near 48th and Point Lobos avenues, at about 10 a.m. Friday and went to check on him, Corriea said Monday by phone.

“We just happened to be out in the area and noticed him,” Corriea said.

“In fairly short order, questions began to arise about who he was and what he was doing there,” Corriea said. “When he came back as a parolee for a violent felony, the level of focus increased.”

Holland was then arrested and booked for the murder.

  1. Hopefully, Sutro Heights will be the last nice view Holland will see for the rest of his decrepit life. What Holland did to Horan was horrendous, and Harris better prosecute.

  2. If Kamala Harris prosecutes, you can forget about him getting the death penalty (which he deserves). I suspect he’d get 8 months in Hawaii, and then the rest of his life free to ponder his misbehavior and promise never to do it again. If he was guilty of domestic abuse, or frightening a child, Harris would have him suspended by his toes over the City Hall dome for the next year.
