Kinetic sculpture proposed for Fulton Playground renovation

Fulton Playground is on its way to a complete makeover, with construction scheduled to begin in Spring 2011. A committee of neighbors has been hard at work with the Department of Public Works to finalize the layout of the park, select surfaces and new play equipment.

In addition to upgrading the structures and surfaces, the renovation will also include a sculptural centerpiece. After reviewing proposals, artist Moto Ohtake was chosen for both his kinetic energy and movement in his sculptures, as well as his local roots – he earned his BFA and MFA in San Francisco.

This week, the Fulton Playground committee shared the proposal from Ohtake, which shows plans for a 23 foot tall sculpture with 4 moving sections at the top (pictured below). Check out the video above to get a sense of what the scultpure will look like when the wind, which is plentiful at Fulton Playground, blows through it.

Ohtake’s proposal will be reviewed by the city’s Arts Commission’s Visual Arts Committee next Wednesday. If approved, this would be the artist’s first sculpture in San Francisco. Not to mention a nice addition to the new Fulton Playground.
