Construction planned for 17th & California; Miss Tilly’s to relocate temporarily

A concerned reader wrote in last week, asking about the construction notices that are plastered all over the building at the southeast corner of 17th and California. “Any news on whether the construction next to and above Ms. Tilly’s will force her to close?”

The building at 5495 California houses Miss Tilly’s Ballet School, along with a Yoga studio and two residential units behind the commercial space.

I spoke with Tony Kim, the project manager for the proposed construction. They’ll be demolishing the building entirely and replacing it with a 4-unit residence, as well as commercial space on the California Street side. The new building will include a second floor.

Once the building is completed, Miss Tilly’s Ballet School will return to the commercial space. Kim says she’ll relocate her school temporarily, “for one school season”, or roughly one year. Project planners have met with Miss Tilly several times to help design a space that will be more customized to the school’s needs. The school has been located there for 35 years.

Kim says they were eager to make sure Miss Tilly’s was not permanently displaced by the construction. “She’s a neighborhood onhealthy minocycline online institution,” said Kim. So much so that Miss Tilly, a.k.a Tilly Abbe, was honored at City Hall late last year.

It’s not known at this time where Miss Tilly’s plans to relocate to during the construction. This weekend I came across 2901 Clement which used to house a martial arts studio. It’s located across from Presidio Middle School and could be a good place for the Ballet School while it’s displaced (pics below).

5495 California also contains two residential units above, but Kim says they are family to his clients who own the building, “so no one is being unwillingly displaced.”

Presuming everything goes smoothly with the planning department, Kim says they’ll likely start construction in late summer.

If you have more questions about the project, contact Tony Kim at 246-8855 or tony@townconsulting.com. Project plans can be viewed here (PDF).

The planning department hearing about the project is scheduled for this Thursday, January 27 at 1:30pm, City Hall Room 408. Full details included in the notice below, which is also posted at 5495 California.

  1. Good ol’ Tat Wong. Spent many a Saturday morning on its uncomfortable riser seats while my boy kicked and punched.

  2. Sad to hear about such an attractive building demolished. Did gymnastics in there when I was a kid.

  3. I find the project plans to be rather objectionable, replacing the current with a much larger building. What are other neighbors thinking about this proposal? Please speak up?

  4. Only the back portion is being demolished, according to the plans. You can see it in the first drawing.

I don’t see what’s so objectionable about it. 3/4 stories is pretty typical for the area. Who would benefit from keeping it squat?

I wonder–why not have more windows on the north side of the top floor of the taller building, looking out over the shorter building? Is it some sort of code issue?
