CAPTAIN RICHARD CORRIEA’S MESSAGE
Shoplifting is one of our more common crimes but is usually only reported to police when a suspect is detained by a store employee or owner. Most of us never notice a shoplifter at work and are not cognizant of either the degree or affect of a stores’ inventory shrinkage due to theft. Our small businesses are especially vulnerable. In this connection we need a bit of help.

On Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 11:00 AM a suspect entered a store on Geary Boulevard and began to browse in the aisles. Unbeknownst to the store’s employees the person was picking up higher value merchandise and moving it to shelf locations out of view of the check-out counter. Luckily, the store owner noticed the suspect kneel down and start to place the merchandise in a bag that he had carried into the store with him. When challenged about his activity the thief fled from the store. Fortunately, the suspect left empty handed.

The suspect is described as a 5’-5” tall male with gray hair and a beard. He was wearing a black and white colored coat and is described as neatly dressed. He was carrying a shopping bag contacting cardboard boxes.

We can help our small businesses in Richmond ’s vibrant commercial areas both by shopping locally and staying vigilant for shoplifters. It is important that you get a good description of the shoplifter.

If you notice someone that is acting suspiciously please notify the store owner or call the police. Your help is necessary but I don’t want you to take any action alone, and certainly don’t block such a person from running away. If you provide a good description to the police dispatcher the responding officers will have a good chance of making an arrest.

During the past week in the District there were 31 traffic accidents 8 involving injuries. There were 6 citations issued for driving without a license or driving on a suspended license. There were 4 arrests for driving under the influence.
