Public meeting about La Playa Safeway remodel, Feb. 24

Next Thursday, Safeway will hold their next public meeting about the planned remodel of the store at Fulton and La Playa in the outer Richmond District.

In last November’s meeting, they presented a conceptual model of the new design, which had been greatly altered based on feedback from the neighbors that live immediately adjacent to the store on 48th Avenue and La Playa.

Check out the video above for a virtual walking tour around the proposed new Safeway, which includes below ground parking, new retail space on the corner of Cabrillo and La Playa, dedicated bike parking, and an underground loading dock.

In the upcoming meeting, representatives from Safeway will share the latest plans and renderings, including visuals of the architecture and landscaping.

The February 24th meeting will run from 7-9pm at the Great Hall in the San Francisco Zoo. Parking is adjacent and free. For more information on the project, visit safewayonlaplayasf.com.

  1. Gosh, is this a prison or a grocery? Oh…. it’s tons of housing. I suppose we’re supposed to applaud the final nails in the coffin over what was once one of the great public visitor serving coastal destinations in California? We’re supposed to be happy over more ticky tacky square uniform ugly condo housing? Only in SF would the City consider further privatizing precious limited open public space….. reminds me of the horrible housing now corroded and falling apart at the other end of the Great Hwy & Sloat Ave., once an open space gas station that could easily have been retained as public use space. I suppose all those marathon runners have to live some place when the upper Great Hwy isn’t closed for runs, parties, curb painting or sand brushing…..

  2. @4oceans – The architecture of the buildings is not represented in the video – that is just a conceptual walkthrough that is using plain white walls etc. to give you a sense of where there are building vs. landscaping vs. streets etc. You should attend the meeting on February 24th to see the architectural design that is being proposed for the Safeway.

  3. Do you know why the website for the La Playa Safeway never works? I have been trying to take a look now and then about the renos, but it is never up and running.

    thanks.

  4. @Melissa – Hmm, looks like they’re site is in a strange maintenance limbo and they may not be aware of it. I just emailed someone on the Safeway team to let them know. Thanks for the heads up.

  5. Update: Safeway says the site is down for some updates, but should be back online this weekend with materials that were shared in this week’s meeting.
