Hoop it up: Freedarko.com writers at the Rockit Room, Feb. 24

This Thursday, Green Apple Books will host a special event down the street at the Rockit Room that basketball fans will not want to miss.

The event features a panel discussion with FreeDarko.com writers Nathaniel Friedman, Tom Ziller, and Eric Freeman, moderated by author and editor Eli Horowitz.

FreeDarko is a collective of like-minded NBA writers and artists whose blog has become a staple of basketball fandom on the Internet. The blog formerly had a regular spot on McSweeney’s Internet Tendency and is frequently called on by Deadspin.com to provide guest NBA coverage.

Friedman, who serves as the site’s chief operative as Bethlehem Shoals, has written for GQ, Sports Illustrated, Slate, Deadspin.com, and The Nation.

The gang is in town to promote their new book, FreeDarko Presents: The Undisputed Guide to Pro Basketball History. New York Magazine has this to say about the new tome:

FreeDarko isn’t standing outside the mainstream of basketball discussion: It’s driving it … This is a history of basketball told straight, but smartly, with wit and detail and undeniable affection….Any NBA fan can read this: It’s not for grad students and stoners and revisionists; it’s for everyone … We are now living in a FreeDarko world. Hail, hail.”

The panel discussion begins at 7pm at The Rockit Room, located at 406 Clement Street. Stop by to talk shop, meet the writers, and even get your book signed. I bet they’ll have lots to share after this NBA All-Star weekend…
