Thursday was Bike to School Day in San Francisco. Thousands of San Francisco elementary school students from 40 different schools strapped on their helmets and backpacks to cycle their way to class.

Supervisor Eric Mar led the ride for the Richmond District which started at Mountain Lake Park at 12th and Lake and ended at George Peabody Elementary at 251 6th Avenue. Four other city Supervisors led similar rides in their districts.

Bike to School Day is also a celebration of the citywide San Francisco Safe Routes to School program, which organizes the event. Safe Routes to School is in 15 elementary schools and is a joint effort among city departments, community groups, and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, and is led by the SF Department of Public Health.

The program helps students bike and walk to school more through education programs, encouragement and by improving the safety of streets.

  1. I’m glad Supervisor Mar supports biking to school. But where is he when our buildings are crumbling and people’s lives are at risk b’cse signs are falling down? The Alexandria situation is really, really scary…and Mr. Mar is off bike riding. Enough!
