Free 8-week English (ESL) course at the Richmond District YMCA, starts June 6

Do you know someone who speaks minimal English and would benefit from some language classes?

The Richmond District YMCA is offering a free 8-week English as a second language (ESL) course this summer, open to adults (18+) and seniors.

Students can learn the basics of daily English communication through the workshop, held on Mondays and Wednesday from 5pm to 6pm at the YMCA, 360 18th Avenue.

Classes begin the week of June 6th and run through the week of July 27th. Visit the Richmond District YMCA to register or call 235-5022. The last day to register is June 5th.

  1. Sad it isn’t mandatory that everyone speak, even if poorly, english. Every nation should protect its mother tongue.

  2. The Richmond District has a diverse ethnic and cultural mix of residents so these ESL classes offered free at the YMCA with undoubtedly be well attended. Kudos to the YMCA for helping people who want to improve their english language skills.

  3. @John – so we should be protecting…which language exactly? The Italian that Columbus would have spoken, or the Spanish his crew brought with him? The Nordic tongue of the vikings before him, or the hundreds of Native American languages even before that?

I love that community organizations offer programs like this, and do wish and hope the government can offer more (though of course that would mean raising our own taxes) to help new immigrants learn the most common language of the States; but there is no need to impose a government regulation on this. That would only attack the diversity this country is built upon. If people take jobs and join communities that work and live in English, they will learn it. There is nothing to “protect”
