Helicopters hovered over the central Richmond District this morning after an officer-involved shooting took place on Funston Avenue between Balboa and Cabrillo.

The SFFD was called to the residence at 636 Funston Avenue around 7:15am this morning. When they arrived, they found an elderly man on the front stairs, bleeding profusely from stab wounds on his forearm and hands.

SFPD were then called to the scene. When they arrived, they entered the home where they found an elderly woman who had also suffered life-threatening stab wounds to her upper body.

As police attempted to move the female victim, they were confronted by a knife-wielding man who according to SFPD spokesperson Lt. Troy Dangerfield, “was holding a knife in each hand above his head, advancing towards them.”

Police tried to subdue the man with a non-lethal bean bag projectile, but it did not slow him down. Officers then shot the man. “It is clear that this guy had serious intent to hurt the people inside the house as well as the officers” Dangerfield said.

Both victims and the suspect were transported by ambulance to San Francisco General. The Chronicle reports that the suspect, 44 years old, died at San Francisco General at 9:30am. The elderly female victim also died.

The two elderly victims were parents of the suspect. Police later discovered a second woman in the house, the suspect’s sister, who was uninjured and hid during the incident in a locked bedroom.

The 600 block of Funston was closed off to traffic during the investigation.

  1. well if the cops really did use the bean bags first then i have to say props to them for trying non-lethal first. maybe BART police should only be issued bean-bag guns….

  2. Thanks for the story! I was woken up to the helicoptor (I’m on 12th & Geary) and was wondering what was going on. Then I thought to myself… Richmond SF Blog will inform us later on. Hope the victims will be ok and recover well.

  3. According to SFGate, one victim and the suspect died. First homicide in Richmond District this year.

  4. Awful, awful, awful. My heart just breaks for these neighbors. Our beautiful quiet little neighborhood! Just one more reason why we need to think of ourselves as neighbors and a community and pay attention and look out for each other. My sadness also for our Richmond district police officers – an incident like this is awful for them, too. I would appreciate any info on the attacker. We have a whole lot of people camping out in the Park during Outside Lands and HSBG and it’s a big concern of mine. (I came across four — two separate groups of two — still asleep at 10 a.m. on Sunday in the wooded area (trails all through it) between the Rose Garden and the de Young.

  5. Anyone have any ideas of how we can show our support and sympathy for the family? I don’t know them… but this is one of our neighbors. A little sweet elderly lady attacked like this in our own backyard. I run and walk down that block frequently…I just wonder if there’s some way we can show that this really shocks us and matters to us as a community and that we CARE and don’t just say “oh, well, somebody killed… has nothing to do with me…”

  6. Hi Sue – Probably a good question to ask at the community meeting tomorrow night (Oct. 4), which will take place at 6:30pm at the Richmond Rec Center on 18th Avenue.

  7. I might not be able to make it to the meeting tomorrow, but would love to help.. Please, Sue, or anyone else, let me know if you find out more about the family. I am on the same block and am filled with unbelievable grief and shock. I was already at work by the time the police came and it’s made for a very strange day of phone calls to say the very least.

  8. Kudos to our district police in preventing additional assault during this incident and having the foresight to attempt non-lethal control. Unfortunately, the events ultimately required deadly force. I am particularly appreciative of their regular response to calls and efforts to keep our neighborhoods as safe as possible.

  9. I’m not able to attend the meeting today, but I am curious (and hope someone could report back) if the victim was under any medical/psychiatric treatment. I couldn’t help but notice that the family was Asian, and I’ve known that this is an under-served population when it comes to mental health services.

  10. @sue. What is up with your endless attacks on the HSB Festival? If you had taken the time to read the news reports before making unsubstantiated allegations against others you would have known this was a family issue.
