30 trees being planted in the Richmond District this Saturday

On Saturday, Friends of the Urban Forest will be teaming up with residents to plant new trees in several locations in the inner Richmond District.

FUF Planting Manager Sally Bentz tells us they will be planting 30 trees in total, including four at Sutro Elementary School, and another 5 at Star of the Sea School.

Species being planted include Strawberry Tree, Washington Thorn, Bronze Loquat, Flowering Cherry, and Small Leaf Tristania’s.

Friends of the Urban Forest helps residents across the city get new trees planted in their neighborhood. If you’d like to request a planting or volunteer to help with a planting effort, visit the FUF website for more information.

Thanks to RichmondSFBlog reader Tom for the tip!

Free Lands End history walk this Saturday

This Saturday, November 5, the Parks Conservancy is offering a free, three hour walking tour of Lands End with historian and former National Park Service ranger, John Martini (he’s awesome!).

John will take walkers on the full extent of the trail from near the new Lookout Visitors Center location to Eagle’s Point, and back, with plenty of stories along the way.

The tour runs from 10am until 1pm. Meet in the Merrie Way Lands End parking lot, next to Point Lobos Avenue (above Louis’ Diner). RSVP is not required but requested to trailsforever@parksconservancy.org to help with planning.

Did Yet Wah at Clement & 22nd Avenue close for good?

I got word last week that Yet Wah at 2140 Clement at 22nd Avenue looked like it had closed. Cub reporter David reported the shades were drawn, a lot of garbage was out front and all the tables and chairs inside had been pushed into a corner.

I went by this morning and there was a simple “Sorry, we are closed” sign on the door in English and Chinese. When I tried their phone number on the awning, I got the “this number has been disconnected” message from the phone company. Not a good sign for a restaurant that thrived on take out business.

The Yet Wah website is still up but no mention of whether this closure is permanent or temporary. Every time I ate there, Yet Wah seemed to do a brisk business, especially in their upstairs banquet room where they often had large parties.

No permits have been filed against the property so I don’t think the owners are readying for a remodel or something construction-related. So it may be the end of an institution – Yet Wah has been a neighborhood staple since I was a little one.

If you have any more information on the closure, please let us know!

Halloween pics from Lake Street & The Haunted House

We hope everyone had a great Halloween! We headed down Lake Street last night to take pics of some of the scary sights, and wound our way over to the more-popular-than-ever Haunted House at the Appel & Dietrich Market on the corner of 22nd and California.

This year’s haunted house theme was “Grand Guignol,” named for the theatre in the Pigalle area of Paris that specialized in naturalistic horror shows. And even outside, you got the vibe with a working guillotine (we saw a werewolf get his comeuppance!), scary grim reapers on stilts manning the line, and a shady character sleeping overhead in a hammock. The line was too long for us to make it inside but we hear it was a total fright-fest!
