Public meeting about weekend closure for Doyle Drive demolition, April 16

Progress continues on the new Presidio Parkway which will replace Doyle Drive. Looming on the horizon is one of the project’s biggest undertakings – demolishing the raised Doyle Drive roadway – in one weekend.

The actual weekend when this will occur has not been identified yetThe actual weekend closure will take place from Friday, April 27 at 8pm until Monday, April 30 at 5am.

There will be a public meeting to discuss the closure on April 16 at the Richmond Recreation Center, 251 18th Avenue, from 6:30pm until 8pm.

The meeting will provide more information on the weekend closure and demolition process, and project organizers will also update residents on the overall progress of the Presidio Parkway project.

Once the Doyle Drive roadway is removed this spring, traffic will be routed onto a temporary bypass comprised of the new southbound bridge and tunnel, and a temporary roadway. View the full advisory

Tearing down the Doyle Drive roadway is no small task. They’ll employ nearly 40 demolition hammers to remove 258,000 square feet of roadway deck and 5 million pounds of steel. Crews will complete the demolition by working 24/7 during one weekend (date TBA).

If you can’t make the April 16 meeting, another will be held in the Marina District on April 23 at the Golden Gate Room (Landmark Building A) in Fort Mason from 6:30pm to 8pm.

  1. So when this thing is done Park Presidio will intersect with Presidio Parkway? Perfect…

  2. Actually, northbound Park Presidio to eastbound Presidio Parkway will be a part of this first phase. However, westbound Presidio Parkway to southbound Park Presidio is part of the second phase in 2015.

“Presido Parkway” and “Park Presidio”….how much confusion are these similar names going to cause people over the years?! Maybe they should call it Pelosi Parkway instead? Ha!

If I had to guess, the road closure will likely be Memorial Day weekend. These big road closures always seem to happen on long holiday weekends.

  3. Oops. Please disregard the above. It appears that while the connector ramp is completed from northbound Park Presidio to eastbound Presidio Parkway, it will not open until 2015. Not sure why, but we have to wait 3 more years to get quickly to the marina. Bummer.

  4. Ahh, a quick route to the Marina, that will be very bueno.

  5. When the Bay Bridge closes, they announce it more then 3 weeks in advance, and do amazing work in letting people know… this will impact our area as the only route to/from the bridge that weekend, and they announce it now?!!! It also looks like the route from the Main Parade Ground down to Crissy Field is getting closed off for 3 years, Halleck Street, but there is no clear alternate on their website.

  6. Will other parts of the Presidio be closed? We’re getting married on April 28 and had planned on taking some pictures near Lover’s Lane. Will this area be impacted? Thanks!

  7. It will be great once it’s open, but they still have another 3 years to go! I thought it was going to be finished at the end of the year.

  8. Just saw a commercial, for the closure of Doyle Dr. It will be April 27 and 28. They are recommending that GG Bridge not be used since all traffic into SF will be directed to 19th ave.

  9. Did anyone notice that lane split as you approach the light at Marina Blvd and Lombard? That has the potential nightmare situation. I feel people will be flying around that corner and cut in/out of that surprise as they turn the corner. Potential hazard.
