Looking back: San Francisco in the late 1930’s

Another dramatically narrated video tour of old San Francisco has surfaced, which highlights the innovation of the then new Golden Gate and Bay Bridges.

There are some shots of our part of town starting at the 7:00 mark, including the old de Young Museum, a sheep pasture in Golden Gate Park (?), good ol’ buffalo, Lincoln Park, the Legion of Honor, Cliff House and the Great Highway.

“San Francisco by the Golden Gate – city of fond memories and visions of progress for tomorrow.”

  1. Being a coin collector, I particularly enjoyed the scenes of the US Mint in San Francisco. I couldn’t tell what the denomination of the coins that were seen being bagged in this video, but I thought to myself, OMG…look at all those precious uncirculated San Francisco Mint coins! (If I could have just one of them!)San Francisco Mint coins are generally among the more coveted ones to possess among we numismatists, with their overall mintages being usually less (in a given year) than their Denver and Philadelphia Mint counterparts. The SF Mint hasn’t produced any coinage for general circulation (“pocket change coins”) in many years; proof coinage is its present specialty. Where I live, San Francisco Mint coins are seldom seen in circulation and it’s a treat, (at least to coin collector!) to receive, say, a 1971 SF cent in change.
