Tigges Jewelers on Geary becomes third victim of armed robbery this week

Armed robbery seems to be the crime du jour this week in the Richmond District, and the suspects appear the be getting more bold, robbing their latest victims in broad daylight.

This afternoon at 3pm, Tigges Jewelers on Geary near 23rd Avenue was held up at gunpoint by two armed men. The suspects pointed their guns at two female customers, then demanded cash and specific items of jewelry before fleeing the store.

Police put nearby Alamo Elementary school on lock down for about 45 minutes while the police responded to the robbery. During the lock down, officers searched a block near the school, going house to house as other units cruised the neighborhood looking for the suspects.

This is the third armed robbery in less than a week in the Richmond District.

Around 9:30pm last Saturday night, two suspects walked into a business on the 4400 block of Cabrillo near 45th Avenue (Hunan Cafe), and pulled a gun on one of the employees. They later fled with money in a duffle bag.

Just two nights later on Monday, a suspect entered a business on the 2100 block of Clement near 22nd Avenue around 11pm, pointed a revolver at an employee and demanded money from the register.

No arrests were made in either of the earlier cases this week, and it’s not yet known how much the suspects stole in any of the three robberies.

Police did not make any arrests in today’s robbery at Tigges Jewelers, but they are pursuing some leads. According to un-named officers at the scene, the descriptions of the suspects in today’s robbery appear to match those of the Saturday and Monday night robberies.

Thankfully no employees or customers have been hurt in any of these crimes.

Thanks to cub reporter David H. for the updates and photos from the scene.

UPDATE (Aug. 25, 2:30pm): Three suspects are in custody.

  1. My wife had her earrings fixed for free (reset stone), she said they were very nice people. We will make sure to bring them some business as soon as we can.

Please consider bringing them some business if you can…

  2. bet its only a matter of time now before a store owner pops up with a sawed off shotgun on these guys

  3. Not that it matters much, but it was Hunan Cafe on the corner of Cabrillo and 46th that got robbed, not Hakka. Anyway, just wanted to give them some love as we eat their food once or twice a week.

  4. thanks Sarah for the update. glad the suspects are not in custody. that is really scary

  5. Oh, no, poor Lily @ Hunan, MattyJ! She’s the nicest, gentlest person; I guess I know what I’m ordering for dinner tonight. Glad they have suspects in custody; I hope they and the DA make it stick.

  6. Glad to hear that they are in custody, Tigges is a great jewelry store. I went in there a couple of months ago to have the clasp fixed on a Tissot watch. Unfortunately, they could not fix it, but gave me the info I needed to contact the Tissot service in the U.S.

  7. Clement Street at 22nd Avenue at 11 p.m.? I know which business was targeted. I am very sorry about this and hope authorities have apprehended the right people.
