SFPD makes arrests in armed robberies; two suspects lived on 28th Avenue

The SFPD released the following statement today about the arrests made for the three armed robberies that occurred in the Richmond District last week:

SFPD Make Arrest in Richmond District Robbery Series
On August 24th, at 2:45PM, officers from the Richmond District Station responded to a robbery call at a store on the 5800 block of Geary Boulevard. The suspects, two adult males, dressed in dark clothing, one wearing a ski mask, entered the store armed with handguns. One of the suspects ordered an employee to lie on the floor. Using a hammer, the suspects smashed a glass display case, stealing various pieces of jewelry. Hearing the commotion, a second employee emerged from the back of the store and surprised the suspects who fled on foot. The second employee gave chase, following the suspects to 23rd Avenue where one of the suspects pointed a gun at him. The suspect then turned away, running to a gray Volkswagen. The first suspect entered the car, which then began to drive away. The second suspect followed on foot, both turning onto Clement Street. When the employee reached the intersection of 23rd Avenue and Clement, the suspects and Volkswagen were nowhere to be seen.

Responding officers began a coordinated investigation which led to the discovery of the suspects’ vehicle, parked and unattended on the 100 block of 22nd Avenue. Officers were able to see several items of evidence in car, including a hammer and ski mask. Further investigation led to the identity of one suspect who was located at Geary and Webster Street. Two additional suspects were located at a residence on the 400 block 28th Avenue. A 50 year old, male, San Francisco resident and a 48 year old, male San Francisco resident and 23 year old, male, San Francisco resident were placed under arrest and later booked at Richmond Station on charges of: robbery, burglary and conspiracy.

Officers noted that these subjects matched the description of suspects wanted for several other armed robberies that occurred in the Richmond District on preceding days. On August 18th at 9:24PM, two suspects armed with guns robbed a restaurant on the 4400 block of Cabrillo Street. This incident was followed by a robbery of a store on the 2100 block of Clement at 11:00PM on August 20th and the robbery of another store on the 3900 block of Balboa on August 24th at Midnight. Following an investigation by the Department’s Major Crimes Unit, evidence linking the suspects to these robberies was recovered. Both suspects were charged with these additional crimes. Booking photos and names of the suspects will not be released at this time due to pending identification matters.

  1. how dumb can you get? robbing places around the corner where you live? i guess the “hiding in plain sight” technique didn’t apply here.

  2. a 50 and a 48 year old suspects. must be desperate times for these men to do these kind of things at their age.

  3. I have felt very uneasy around balboa and the early 20 Aves lately. Glad some folks were caught. Thank you SFPD.

  4. This doesn’t surprise me at all. I live around the corner from the residence on 28th, I even asked Sarah about it. This abandoned house was occupied by these guys and it was chronic 24/7 crime. These guys were either squatting in their own house or someone else’s, quite openly. The front of the formerly beautiful house {between two still lovely, maintained residences} was always broken window/front and side doors with multiple empty alcohol bottles and trash. There was clearly drug dealing going on. I assumed every crime in the neighborhood was due to their presence. I am so glad they did something to land them in jail, hopefully for a while-the last time a narcotics violation was posted for this address, it didn’t seem to keep the main guy away for long. These guys and that house have been freaking me out since last Spring.

  5. This is an interesting story, and the identification of their residence as an abandoned home makes me wonder how the status of a home can be identified. For instance, there is a house on 44th Ave. between Geary and Anza that looks as though it has not been maintained for many years. Recently I’ve noticed that a window by the front door has been open, and today a newer pickup truck was parked in front of the house. How do you know if the house is inhabited, and if it’s inhabited, are the residents legally inhabiting it?

  6. Glad they got ’em. That’s pretty scary to consider, but the area is getting more dangerous. Especially during the dark hours when I dread being out and about solo.

  7. Thanks goes to the person that chased them down and identified the car. Otherwise these criminals get away.
