Video: Navy LCAC lands on Ocean Beach this morning

As part of a training drill, a Navy Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) vessel landed on Ocean Beach this morning near Fulton Street. Thanks to edrabbit and David for capturing video.

The training exercise was meant to simulate a response to a major disaster in which emergency supplies need to get delivered to the city in the event other entries are unavailable.

It’s all part of Fleet Week 2012, during which Bay Area First Responders and the U.S. Military meet, train together and discuss the latest onhealthy generic aciphex lessons learned from recent Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response operations.

Were you there? Tell us what it was like in the comments.

Sarah B.

What comes must also leave – here’s video of the LCAC departing Ocean Beach, creating a rainbow in its wake:

craft and was surprised by how much cargo it could hold,” Mar told us in a comment.

  1. It was awesome! Thanks, Sarah, for posting info about this a few days in advance. I heard a lot of people saying they just found out about it this morning on the news.

  2. I was out there this morning and really enjoyed seeing it! I also learned a lot about how the craft can help SF during an emergency to quickly dispatch aid to the city.

I got to board the craft and was surprised by how much cargo it could hold. Really helpful to see planning like this before the next earthquake hits.

  3. (Just out of curiosity: Ms. B., can you vouch for the authenticity of this “Eric Mar” entity?)

  4. @alyxandr – Meaning is it really Supervisor Eric Mar posting in the comments? Yes it is him (or sometimes a member of his staff).

  5. I’m surprised this wasn’t publicized more. I only knew about it because of this blog. I wish I had gone to see it (instead of sleeping in). Good reporting!

  6. I like how some people do everything they can to eliminate voluntary JROTC in schools, yet they are too glad to accept “help” from the military when it suits them.

  7. I like how some people construct simplistic straw-men, which they then proceed to knock down with a great deal of smug self-righteousness.

  8. @Orange October & Khaki – Glad you were able to make it – looked like a cool experience!

  9. Cool video. The U.S. Navy is WORLD CLASS and truly a ‘global force for good’ in the world.

However, given his disdain for the U.S. military (as well-documented by his opposition of ROTC in public high schools), I’m shocked to see Eric Mar in attendance. He must have thought that the hover-craft was bio-fuel (or pedal) powered.

He’ll show up wherever and whenever there’s a chance for his picture to be taken. He says he created the Happy Meal ban in concern of what’s in children’s diets yet admits to liking Jack in the Box and did NOTHING about what goes in kid’s lunches when he was with the school board.

Wish I could’ve been at the hovercraft landing though but I got stuck at work.

  11. I was surprised it was Eric’s posting. I though he usually talks in WE. We love.. We support.. We too… I wonder who that WE are? We the people? We the sups? We Eric Mar?

I too was sorry to have to miss the show, I was at work. Thanks for the video!
