Photo: Geary Parkway Motel

This motel’s sign – located on Geary near 12th Avenue – gets photographed a lot. But I like this juxtaposition of this shot against the blue sky.

On a related but random note, do you realize how few hotels/motels we have in the neighborhood?

  1. Whenever family visits and they don’t want to stay with us or there are too many people, we have them stay at the Geary Parkway. The rooms are pretty small, quite nice (much better than Seal Rock Inn), and you can often get a rate for under a $100 bucks. But, the parking lot can be a challenge. The inexplicable ability of my Jeep to have a blind spot that completely blocks a pole is evident of the paint from said pole on the left wheel fender of my car.

  2. No need for motels. The traffic circle has scared away all the tourists. 🙂

  3. Yes, I do notice the shortage of short-term lodgings in the Richmond. Heck, even if you add those in the Sunset, they’re still rare, and all lack, ah, intangibles. I’d love to be able to refer GW guests to a local hotel but don’t feel I can. If only there were something like a Courtyard or a Joie de Vivre property in the ‘hood.

    That said, cool photo!

  4. The Laurel Inn at 444 Presidio at California is a very nice option even though it is slightly outside of the The Richmond.

  5. I was hoping to officially stay in the Richmond, i.e., west or Arguello, during my recent visit last November, but as Sarah as noted, there really isn’t much in the way of traditional motels/hotels. I did find plenty of private one room B&Bs, and I think I did read online of a low-cost hostel (not for me) on Geary close to (but not actually in) the Richmond. I was aware of the Geary Parkway Motel and the Seal Rock Inn as options for staying in the Richmond proper, but I kinda sorta backed off from them when I checked out the rates for the Seal Rock; I found Seal Rock’s rates too be a bit high for this (out of necessity) budget traveler. I figured the Geary Parkway’s would be in the same price range. I ended up staying in a wonderful B&B at Divisidero and Ellis that fortunately was easy walking distance to the Richmond for this marathon runner.

You gotta love that old school neon sign of the Geary Parkway’s, complete with the arrows directing one’s attention to the motel. This sign would have been at right home along Route 66, along with the many other neon signs seen similar to it along that famed highway during its heyday. Signs like this are clearly endangered species.
