Just before 10pm on Sunday night, a fire broke out at a large apartment building located at 5642 California Street at 19th Avenue.

Two firehouses responded to the blaze, where billowing flames could be seen on the roof of the building. Other adjacent building to the apartment building were evacuated as a precaution.

Cub reporter David H. was on the scene and said no injuries were reported. The fire was under control by 11pm.

SFAppeal reports that one firefighter sustained a minor injury, and that nine residents were displaced by the fire.

Thanks to readers E E, Kathryn H. and Cheryl M. for sharing photos from the fire, and to the other readers that emailed, tweeted or facebooked us about the incident.

UPDATE (1/22/13): SFAppeal reports that the fire caused $400,000 in damage, displaced 9 residents and minorly injured a firefighter. SFFD says the fire “appears to have been accidentally sparked by smoking materials”.

  1. this was my apartment. two of my cats, a tiny grey and white shorthair named nez is missing, and a huge shorthair black cat named sam is missing. if you see them or maybe even catch them, please bring them to Picture machine tattoo, my husband works there. this has been our neighborhood for almost 20 years between two address, please help us.

otherwise everyone that lives in the building is fine, everyone is safe and healthy, thank goodness.

  2. I’m guessing they might be confused, frightened, and hiding. Maybe you could try going back with a can of their favorite food and calling to them like when it’s feeding time. Hearing a familiar voice could be what’s needed to bring them out of hiding and back to your family.

Good luck and sorry to hear about the fire.
