CAPTAIN SHARON FERRIGNO’S MESSAGE
Yesterday, I attended the Memorial service for slain Santa Cruz Police Officers Elizabeth Chase Butler and Butch Baker. What a tremendous loss not only to our law enforcement community but to humanity. Their families who must now live day in and day out with their loss and the Santa Cruz Police Department will remain in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Both Elizabeth and Butch were true heroes who had warm and committed lives as loving parents, partners and public servants, their commitment to the community and the outpouring of support was heartwarming.
With Saint Patrick’s Day quickly approaching it’s never too soon to line up your designated drivers to make sure everyone has a safe celebration. We will be conducting DUI checkpoints throughout the city and officers will be on high alert drunk and disorderly behavior.
Our next Community meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 6pm. It will be in the Community Room, here at Richmond Station, 461 6th Ave. (NOTE TIME CHANGE)
NOTEWORTHY ARRESTS
On 03/07/13 at 11:40am, the victim was walking on the 5500 block of Geary, and stopped at the bus shelter to see what time the next bus was coming. He noticed the suspect in the area but paid no attention to him. The victim then continued walking when the suspect approached him and yelled, “What are you doing?” “Why did you stop to look at the bus stop and not wait for the time to show up?” Then without warning, the suspect kicked the victim in the leg then punched him in the eye, causing it to bleed. The suspect continued to push the victim around as the victim asked other pedestrians to call the police. The officers arrived on scene and detained the suspect. It was later determined that on 03/05/13 at 22nd and Irving, this same suspect assaulted another person for no reason. The 49 year old male was charged with aggravated assault.

On 03/04/13, a woman came to Richmond Station to turn in a wallet she had found 2 days prior on the 600 block of 21st Ave. The wallet contained a driver’s license and officers responded to the victim’s home to return the property. It was at that time that the victim, an 84 year old male told the officer that he had been robbed on that block on 03/02/13 at 3pm. The victim stated that he was waiting in front of a residence when the suspect ran up and removed the victim’s wallet from his front pant pocket. The victim then took a step back, lost his footing and banged his head against the wall of the residence. The suspect was described as a black male, with no further description.

“…The suspect took two computers, clothing, and one shoe from each pair of shoes…”
Should the police be looking for a peg-legged burglar or a thief with an absurd sense of humor?

I’m betting this is the same guy I’ve seen a few times, walking down clement and boxing with people, throwing fake punches, bouncing around, bumping them . . . he just never picks the right guy to lay him out and there’s never a cop in sight . . . oh yeah, there’s a patrol car parked a few blocks away, always, but that’s just because the cops think no one will walk against a red light if they see a cop car. funny.

Wait – what??

Can you describe him, so that we know who to look out for? I often do my shopping on Clement, and would not like to run into him.
gg, the guy was white, rather short and chubby. Not very specific, but I was on the other side of the street and not wearing my glasses.
He tried kicking the other guy about 20 times before making contact and it was a rather pathetic showing once he started “boxing”. The guy he was attacking could’ve walked away at any point, or simply beat the crap out of the guy (he was about twice the size of the attacker), but for some reason stood face-to-face while not saying anything for 7-8 minutes, getting kicked and punched (once). That made me think he had to know him and didn’t want to hurt him, but I guess not.
At one point the attacker pushed the second guy rather violently into the windows of the H&R Block, which was the most effective attack he mustered.
I yelled to the guy that we’d called the cops and that he had a chance to stop before escalating the situation further. He looked at me for a second or two, but then he just kept going and wasn’t *really* hurting the other guy.
I was waiting for the bus and was late for work, or I would have ran over and intervened. Its kinda shitty to see a bunch of people just weaving past on the sidewalk and taking pictures with their phones, instead of making sure the guy doesn’t hurt anyone or himself.
When the cops came, the guy took off running, with the second guy trying to stop him. Didn’t get very far.
