Good Samaritans rescue pigeon from a muddy Spreckels Lake in GGP

As we mentioned about a week ago, Rec & Park recently drained most of Spreckels Lake to make repairs to the walking trails and retaining walls.

Last Friday, reader Abigail P. was walking around the lake when she noticed a man putting plastic bags around his legs. She stopped to see what he was up to.

Turns out he had spotted a stranded pigeon in the middle of the lake, stuck in the muddy remains. The bird was struggling to get free and was covered in heavy mud.

The man waded out, grabbed the pigeon, and brought it back to shore where another woman rinsed the mud off of it. The pigeon waddled away and was on his way.

“Both of them deserve praise. Several of us who were watching clapped after the rescue,” Abigail said. She snapped these photos of the good Samaritans.

That’s one lucky pigeon! Let’s hope he tells his buddies to avoid the lake until it gets filled back up in mid-August.

  1. Good thing they rescued the pigeon before some lucky coyote strolled by!

    Also good thing they got in and out of there before the police showed up, what with plastic bags being illegal and all ;^}

  2. That act is certainly a kindness, but pigeons, along with those infernal black crows, are non-native and drive out and take food from species which actually belong here. Darwin was cheated at Spreckels lake that day (wish they would replace the huge Speckels TREE that RecPark removed and cemented over).
