Barley cafe opening Sunday on Clement near 5th Avenue

We mentioned earlier this week that a new cafe was opening up in the former Java House space on Clement near 5th Avenue. Reader Derek saw the doors open on Tuesday and stopped in to get the scoop and snap more pics.

Derek talked to Asher, one of the owner/operators who is also a Richmond District resident. The cafe is called Barley and they’ll start with a soft launch this Sunday, serving just coffee and beverages initially.

Once they get rolling, Asher says they will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner and highlighted some dishes including vanilla bean French toast, on-site roasted chicken, soups and “Smashburgers”.

“The Smashburgers sounded like a twist on sliders consisting of 3 patties grilled with spices and carmelized onions squished together!” Derek said.

Once Barley gets their liquor license, they’ll also be serving beer and wine.

Thanks to Derek for the scoop and the pics. We look forward to trying it!

  1. Looks beautiful! Can’t wait to check it out. Welcome to the neighborhood!

  2. It’s wonderful to see the space revitalized. I walked by last night and saw the plants on the wall, looking very nice. I wish the new owners all the best.

I remember when I first moved to the neighborhood it was a nice cafe with beautiful murals of the 12 muses. Slowly the cafe went down hill, and then one year someone vandalized the mural, which was never fixed, just eventually pained over white. It was sad to see such a decline.

  3. So nice to hear of another choice in food coming to the neighborhood! And such a nice update to the patio, that was so icky with all the old men smoking on it when you walked by before. Best Wishes to the owners!

  4. So glad to see that Clement Street gets more and more cleaned up. I walk there almost daily btw 5th and 11th or so. It is disgusting. The streets are full with grime, filth, rotting food that businesses sweep out; it smells disgusting there as a result; the storefronts are dilapidated and dirty (just look at those awnings and store signs) and it is one of the most unpleasant neighborhoods in SF. Now we have seen some new businesses move in who have respect for the community. As a result the Eastern part of Clement is beginning to get cleaned up. I have a lot of respect for new owners who have the balls to move in there, so I will support each and everyone of those new businesses. And while I like and support Blue Danube, every time I walk out of there I feel dirty- perhaps the new competition helps them to clean the place up.

  5. Well. I wouldn’t place the Inner Richmond even in the Top 10 unpleasant neighborhoods in SF (Tenderloin, SOMA, Inner Mission, Outer Mission, Excelsior, Outer Sunset…), but I agree it has seen better times. Here’s wishing our new neighbors well!

  6. Sounds wonderful, can’t wait to give it a try! Already looks like a vast improvement.

  7. I went today and it is really nice there! The chef let me know that they will progressively build up a bigger menu. They will have breakfast everyday starting Tuesday. In about two weeks they will have a full in brunch menu Friday, Saturday, Sunday! They will start with just small pastries and stuff and build up to a full American breakfast!
