Video: Bird’s eye view of surfing at Ocean Beach

Looks like someone rigged up a camera on a small craft of some sort, and managed to grab some nice video of the Ocean Beach surf (and some surfers). The music, well that could use some work, but we’re digging the visuals 🙂

  1. Looks like video was created using one of those drones you can buy at someplace like Fry’s.

Pretty cool visuals but yeah, the music….meh.

  2. Just conditioning us to be OK with drones…..cool….Personally, I’d love to see a similar video, with the same music, connected with a drone carrying out a mission for our Dear Leader in Pakistan or Yemen, or any other country with whom we are not at war.

  3. The music does kind of drone doesn’t it?

    Sorry, I just couldn’t resist!!

  4. I liked the music. What’s with people not able to comprehend anything other than hiphop beat these days? The music had several melodic streams, and neat latin beat. It’s cool, man – not full of heavy bass and “f-this and f-that” jive with pretend singers who use auto-tune to sound good. the music was smooooth! More of this!

As for us “getting used to drones”, yes – we had better get used to them. I want to see night drones in the Richmond to catch the taggers so that they can be prosecuted. What’s wrong with surveillance, as long as it is done right. Stop fighting surveillance and start looking for ways to make surveillance work and be more transparent.

  5. Nice video but the music doesn’t quite fit…what would have been better – perfect – is if the video featured music by The Aquamarines, a local band who do an annual OB clean-up in the summer.

  6. I also liked the music, and to whomever did the video, nice job all around. You ought to try hooking up with some of the surfers and get their ok to do some close-ups. But still, great visuals of Ocean Beach we hardly ever see.

  7. sweet!!! love seeing the surf from that pov. and don’t you think the “someone” is Ralph Mandarano as noted in the copyright at the end of the video?

  8. I want one! But I’m not sure if I’d have the nerve to fly my $1,000 device over the water like that. What happens if the battery dies, or the thing goes out of radio control range, or I have a bird strike without the skill & water-proof-ness of Sully Sullenburger? It’s not a Boeing, but it’s not cheap either. Thanks to Ralph for having the nerve.

  9. They’re called quad-copters, and have been around for some time now.
Part of the hobby of radio control aircraft.
    Drone sounds so menacing.

  10. So I looked the drone things up on Amazon. The more expensive ones have GPS route planning included so you apparently can program their flight ahead of time so you don’t have to worry so much about them flying out of range. And it seems like they sometimes have features that have them automatically return to their starting point, again based on GPS. Probably the features needed by the military/CIA are filtering down to the consumer versions. I guess I wouldn’t mind finding one under my Christmas tree for me this year.

  11. One of the things about these quadcopters (and other UAVs too) is that they’re potentially dangerous, potentially lethal. Much worse than having your $1000 toy go down in water is to have it go down into people. Its kind of a grey area but there are some laws which affect their use in public areas and I’m not really sure if this video or the ones made in GGPark are legal.

    Beautiful film though

  12. Last time I checked, they are legal as long as you don’t go over 400 feet in elevation, and the quadcopter doesn’t not go beyond the range of your control.

  13. Wouldn’t it be great if the videographer could bring us the whole experience by providing the SOUND of the surf, wind, gulls, etc. not just the eye candy?

  14. Love the video, but please use the sounds of the ocean as they were live. The music kills the video instead of enhancing what youre seeing.
