Here’s a little puppy love for your Valentine’s Day…
Reader and Richmond District resident Chelsey sent us a note earlier this week about some pups who are looking for a home:
The mom dog, Betty, was to be put down at a shelter in Modesto and the rescue group I volunteer for, Wonderdog, got her and the unborn litter out of there at the last second. She had her pups in my car on the bay bridge! Anyway, I am fostering them right here in the Richmond district and would love it if the pups stayed Richmond hounds.
Betty is a 25 lb beagle/lab mix and the puppies appear to be a Beagle/Pitbull/Lab mix and will likely be medium-to-large size when fully grown. You can check out the puppies in the video above, or in their photos on their Wonder Dog page.
There are five girls and three boys – Huxley is the lover boy of the group, Wednesday is small but big on personality, Waya has the softest coat, Dickens is very loyal, Miesha is the sweet kissy little sister, Mochi is sweet and goofy, Dolly is calm and caring, and Howl is the strong man of the group.
If you’re interested in adopting the pups, you can apply through the Wonderdog website, which charges an adoption fee of $275 that includes their first set of shots, first vet exam, and spay/nueter.
The pups will also be on view at The Animal House this Saturday from 12-3pm, located at 157 Fillmore near Waller. Chelsey is also working on a future appearance for them at Pet’s Corner on Geary and Arguello.
Let’s see if we can keep all 8 of these babies right in the ‘hood! 🙂

Aww! How precious! Thank you for saving the whole family!
Awwww! So cute, I helped with a litter of 14 a few years ago, all the puppies and Mom were adopted; though not all stayed in SF proper we still managed a few puppy reunions which were grand! Yes, the puppies and their Mom remembered each other and it was quite a wonderful experience. I’m hoping to meet this gorgeous litter on Saturday!
Just…too…CUTE!!!
Do we really want more Pit-mix dogs in the neighborhood???
Chelsey, thank you for taking care of this litter of pups and mom. I’m trying to imagine what it was like to be driving a car over the Bay Bridge while a dog was delivering puppies in it! I hope these pups find good loving homes soon. I, for one, would love to see them strolling the neighborhood. The ASPCA has a really interesting, and thorough, page on pit bulls that would be great reading for anyone thinking of getting a pit or pit mix, and for those that have negative feelings towards the breed. Here is the link.

It is important to note that even in this very “pro-Pitbull” article, they make a number of admissions about the inherent aggressive nature of these dogs. For example:
“However, because of pit bulls’ natural tendencies, a little squabble between friends can turn into a serious fight, even if a pit bull has been very well socialized. And, after experiencing a fight or two, a pit bull may become testy with unfamiliar dogs in general. …
“Pit bulls aren’t vicious monsters—but they are dogs who have been bred to fight with other dogs. While some pit bulls are indeed very easygoing, others should not be left alone with other dogs, cats or other pets. Pit bulls are strong, determined dogs. It might not be a pit bull who starts a disagreement, but he may be the one to finish it….
“And pit bulls may become aggressive more quickly when exposed to the hectic, high-octane energy of a dog park environment. If there’s a squabble, a pit bull may be one of the first dogs to jump into the fray…. .”
The article also states that “banned in certain American cities and in some foreign countries.” There are other resources about how these dogs should be banned, but I won’t go into them here. For all these reasons, I don’t want Pitbulls or Pit-mix dogs in my neighborhood, especially because I have a 5 year old child.
Everyone thought my dog had pit in her- I had her DNA done and it was boxer not pit. Anyway the lab beagle should counteract nicely and with the correct positive owner there would be no problem. Negative parents= negative dog. Positive parents = positive dog. The Mum looks beautiful, is she also up for adoption? The puppies look fat and healthy
If they were full pits with full papers with a champion blood line i wouldnt mind paying $250 but for a mix with no papers wouldnt pay more than $100 used to bred shar peis so i know what im talking about
“Champion” at what? Killing other dogs? I think there is no reason to allow this breed in the City of San Francisco.
