Kanye West, Tom Petty, Killers to headline Outside Lands 2014

The 2014 lineup for Outside Lands features L to R: Kanye West, Tom Petty and the Killers.

This morning, Another Planet Entertainment finally announced the much-anticipated lineup for the 2014 Outside Lands Music Festival in Golden Gate Park, which takes place August 8-10.

Rumors had been circulating about possible headliners like Bruce Springsteen (new album out! he needs west coast dates!), D’Angelo (who had to cancel last year’s appearance), the Avett Brothers (who last played OSL in 2008) and even hat-wearing Pharell. But alas, none of them are in the final lineup, though this year’s list is nothing to sneeze at and contains the usual assortment of rock, electronic, funk and indie artists.

Headlining the 2014 festival is hip-hop artist Mr. Kim Kardashian aka Yeezus Kanye West, rock legends Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Las Vegas rockers The Killers.

Secondary headliners include thrift-shop specialists Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Arctic Monkeys, EDM favorite Tiesto, Death Cab for Cutie and Flaming Lips.

70 bands in all will perform during the 3-day festival, which takes place in several areas of Golden Gate Park including the Polo Fields, Hellman Hollow and Lindley Meadow. Last year’s festival drew 65,000 concertgoers per day.

Organizers have not released the festival schedule yet, so we don’t know who plays on which day yet. But that’s intentional as they’re trying to sell 3-day passes.

Outside Lands 2014 3-day passes go on sale this Thursday at 10am via Ticketmaster. Prices are $255 – $275 for regular passes, $595 for VIP which includes exclusive access to viewing areas, access to the Polo Lounge, special restroom facilities and other goodies.

Single day tickets will go on sale at a later date.

Who’s in?!

  1. I’m just venting my disappointment, here, but I really really wanted the main headliner to be Springsteen! Tom Petty was the biggest name available? Really? Was Sleeptrain Pavilion busy with REO Speedwagon or something? Meh…

  2. Cue endless complaining about parking and noise for a three-day event that brings millions of dollars to the local economy in 3…2…

  3. Kanye West? Seriously? Misogynist; egomanical wannabe “designer”; half-talent hip-hopper; pure narcissist (with matching spouse!) This is supposed to be a talent coup? Baloney! This is a pretty poor lineup.

Also, about the “millions of dollars to the local economy”: it’s getting REALLY old watching American cities sell out every square meter of bus, train, museum, parkland, sport stadium and school real estate to commercial interests just because we’re too unimaginative and non-innovative to create economically sustainable urban environments.

I walked through Outside Lands last year and it was a zoo. No thanks.

  4. “a three-day event that brings millions of dollars to the local economy”

What are the countervailing costs? the opportunity costs?

    For instance:
    – how many people leave town because they don’t want to be near the madness – we lose their $$$ while they’re gone?
    – how much for public safety coordination?
    – how much business is lost because certain streets and venues are blocked to cater to OL?
    – how much to repair public vandalism?
    – how much to repair damage to GG Park?
    and so on…

What gets me is that “a three-day event that brings millions of dollars to the local economy” has countervailing costs. It’s like saying “war brings millions of dollars to the local economy”, without considering the costs – pre-during-and-post war. The same applies here.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t have cultural events, but Outside Lands happens in a way that is offensive to the gentle peace of GG Park and surrounding community. It doesn’t resonate with most locals, who actively oppose it, or endure it. It’s NOT a vernacular event; it’s produced by Another Planet Entertainment, Superfly Presents, and Starr Hill Presents. THOSE are the people that profit, at the expense of neighborhood peace.

Do I want to hear the ridiculous noise of Kanye West booming into my living room, just so that Another Planet Entertainment, Superfly Presents, and Starr Hill Presents can make $$$ ? No.

  5. @ Adam F Yeah, looks like your right – and given the general demeanor of those who attend hiphop events, it will be another reason for locals to watch their backs. I have already seen more than I need to from Richmond venues that were eventually forced out of business because they could not control crowds when hiphop acts were staged.

Listen to this tune: It’s all about “Kanye”;; about how great he is; it’s riddled with misogyny, incorrect historical references, and hate for white people. And this is who is headlining Outside Lands? In GG Park? For the general public? And you know WHY, because he will draw from all over the place, and make a PROFIT for the producers. That’s all that counts.

What I want to see is all the fans of Kanye’s rubbish singing it when they are in their 70’s. That should be a hoot!

  6. I have lived near the park for 12 years and am excited to hear Kanye and others. Hopefully will figure out where there is a hole in the fence to sneak in.

  7. This three day event is ok with park and rec but, “Jimmy’s Old Car Picnic” which had been going on for 25 yrs with no impact to neighborhood, had to be hassled every year to get a permit for a one day event. The irony of it all! I guess they won, no more car show:(

  8. @Julie, about “Jimmy’s Old Car Picnic”.

Follow the money; the producers of the Outside Lands zoo have a lot of pull at City Hall; they make millions on this event (Another Planet Entertainment, Superfly Presents, and Starr Hill Presents.); they completely take over the West side of San Francisco for the better part of a week; they leave mountains of trash and frustrated neighbors in their wake. The musicians make a ton of money; the producers make a ton of money; the city *claims* to make a ton of money (but can’t show that it does – as usual). Yet, there is ATT Park and several other potential outside musical event venues, unused.

Same thing with the proposed skate board park near Ocean Beach. Follow the money. Yesterday, at about 8:30pm, there were 6-7 dudes at Safeway, skateboarding *inside* of Safeway, completely oblivious to people walking the aisles. Other skateboarders inside Safeway thought it was amusing. Clueless! Multiply that kind of behavior by 100 – every day – if those skate board parks get built.
