Man threatens suicide after DUI stop on Park Presidio Saturday night

Late Saturday night around midnight, northbound traffic on Park Presidio Boulevard between Clement and Geary was diverted due to an incident with a traffic stop.

SFAppeal reports that SFPD pulled over a man on Park Presidio on suspicion of a DUI. The driver then threatened to kill himself and was armed with a knife. He cut himself during the incident.

More police and SWAT team members were called to the scene. Flash grenades were used to subdue the suspect who was then detained and transported to a hospital.

Traffic backed up onto 12th Avenue on Saturday night due to the closure on Park Presidio. The incident concluded around 1am.

  1. So that’s what that was. I was taking a taxi across Park Presidio at Geary at that exact time and we saw tons of cops and SWAT vehicles. It was kindof crazy. The taxi driver said he had heard from a dispatcher that they thought it was a bomb or something similar, and there did seem to be a lot of official vehicles there beyond just cops. There was nothing on the news about it, so I wasn’t sure.

  2. According to the police scanner, they brought in an armored vehicle to pin the vehicle and used flash-bang grenades to try to get the guy out of the car.

  3. We were actually stopped on Cabrillo at Park Presidio when they were all headed towards Geary. We were laughing because the guy was driving at 15 mph down Park Presidio calmly, without a seeming care in the world (other than the 10 cop cars with lights and sirens slow speed chasing him OJ-style of course).
