Photos: Cock-a-doodle do! Roosters living in Golden Gate Park

Neighbors living near the west end of Golden Gate Park have been hearing an unusual sound in the mornings – crowing roosters.

Readers tell us that two roosters have been living in the park for the past couple of months near a lake. How they took up residence in the park is a mystery. Perhaps they escaped a home coop or were abandoned there?

Even more mysterious is how they’re surviving, considering the coyotes and raccoons that wander Golden Gate Park.

A reader snapped these pics of the handsome devils. Cock-a-doodle-doo!

  1. Hmmm, maybe the Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill have given them some survival tips….

  2. They’ve been there since this past spring, at least. I was told by another park goer that there were originally three, but one of them was killed by a German shepherd early on. The other two seem to be a bit wilier.
Now all we need are a few hens…

  3. I bet someone realized too late that their egg-laying hen was actually a loud little rooster.
Hope they stay alive, get rescued and rehomed.

  4. I saw them by Northlake and called animal care and control but they said they tried to capture them but it’s too difficult so they don’t respond anymore.

  5. Please god no one release hens! The last thing we need are more invasive feral species degrading the park.

Frankly I’m waiting for the parrot backlash… I kind of like them, but they are noisy, and they’ve definitely set up shop in the ‘hood – a flock of over 20 went over Funston & Balboa just a few days ago, headed towards GG Park. I figure at some point they will transition from attraction to nuisance, as their numbers grow.
