Food news: De Place will be Dragon Beaux, Mescolanza closing, more on Pivot

DE PLACE IS UNDER DE CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP
“De place! De place!” Reader @cassfung tells us that something is happening at the former Big Heart Video Cafe / De Place space at 5700 Geary. As you may remember, it was under construction for over a year, then finally opened as De Place, only to close a few weeks later. According to a sign on the door, “De Place” is going to become “Dragon Beaux”. We couldn’t find any info online about Dragon Beaux other than that their beer and wine liquor license is pending. “Hope the food is better than its name,” @cassfung said.

MESCOLANZA CLOSING ITS DOORS AFTER 26 YEARS
Cozy Italian restaurant Mescolanza, located on Clement near 23rd Avenue, is closing its doors after 26 years in business. On their website, restaurant owner Ruben Macedo says that the business has to relocate, and that its last day of business will be December 31. Let’s hope they find another home soon in the neighborhood.

MORE DETAILS ON NEW WINE BAR PIVOT
More details have emerged about Pivot, the new wine bar opening at 443 Clement Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. According to EaterSF, the venture is spearheaded by veteran sommeliers Michael Ireland (Restaurant at Meadowood, Quince) and John Vuong (Ame, Gary Danko). Expect an “elected group of 30 wines by the glass, from $6 a glass from the keg to rare and pricey finds from the proprietors’ personal collections.” The 47 seat space will also feature a menu focused on “super high-quality snacks and light meals that pair with their wines”. They anticipate opening in Spring 2015.

  1. Mescolanza is awesome. I sure hope we don’t get a reclaimed wood, wall garden, pop-up, artisinal soda fountain and confectionery.

  2. Aw, we’ll miss you, Mescolanza!

And 47 seats at Pivot? Wow. I recall that space being fairly small. Looking forward to it. The wine bar at Geary and Spruce is great but sometimes a bit far of a walk for me….

  3. Bummer. We’ll miss Mescolanza. Dinner there and a movie at 4-Start is a great Richmond evening.

  4. Breaks my heart that Mescolanza is closing. I have eaten there numerous times.

  5. I saw a new restaurant called Grinders Pizzeria going in next door to Cinderella Bakery (Balboa and 6th).

  6. Mescolanza – please please relocate within the neighborhood (maybe Balboa between 30th and 40th area?) – we have been enjoying you for decades and don’t want to see you go!

  7. Please don’t leave us, Mescolanza! We have loved everything about you for years – the food, the wine and, most of all, the family. Our absolute favorite neighborhood restaurant. If you have to go, please don’t go far.

  8. Will miss Mescolanza. This is a Richmond District treasure. Hope they find a new place in the neighborhood.

  9. If anyone has info about where Mescolanza moves let me know. One of my fav Italian restaurants. A true neighborhood gem. Please please relocate to somewhere close. What’s going on over there? That part of clement seems to be dying:(

  10. Re. all those wishing for Mescolanza to relocate in the hood, and though I’m completely ignorant of any of the details, I’d suspect that rents for commercial space in SF combined with the tight margins for even successful restaurants might make that an unlikely proposition.

  11. Re De Place. Per my father’s buddies at the coffee shop, it was bought out by the owners of Koi Palace. I don’t know if this is true or not because the Chron didn’t mention it but if it is then I won’t have to trek all the way to DC to get dim sum.

  12. I wonder if Mescolanza could break the curse of the SW corner of 19th and Clement? (Lika, Juku, et al). Not that I’d wish for them to have to try…they deserve the best. But it’s almost the right size for the business they do, and within the same walk-shed for locals. (And one characteristic of the previous three restaurants in that space is they were starting a customer base from scratch). I think they’d do as well on mid-Geary as outer Balboa (although the street’s not quite so cozy).

I swear, if every restaurant that got displaced in the City took refuge on Outer Balboa, we’d need to extend that street a mile west. Or (more practically) retrofit some storefronts into the residential sections, east and west of the current strip.

  13. Trade Mescolanza for Ernestos… Though the last few times I went to Mescolanza it had gone downhill from previous visits (or maybe seeing what appeared to be bags of “frozen” being used colored my opinion). Would still rather have this restaurant within walking distance… Keep rustic!

  14. The gnocchi with pesto cream and caprese is so good at Mescolanza. I do agree with SFsanity, the last time I ate there it was not as good and this was back in April (maybe I should have had the gnocchi). Regardless, they do real Italian food, not the Americanized stuff you get at Ernesto’s or Gaspare’s.

I have been telling all my friends to eat at Mescolanza before they move at the end of the year. Crossing my fingers that they stay in the ‘hood.

  15. Sorry that Mescolanza is closing. Hope they can relocate in the district. Da Place going to be another Asian restaurant on Geary Blvd and in the district, just we need!
