Repairs on Lake Street sinkhole to continue through Tuesday, Dec. 9

  1. I saw more kids playing outside, and more people hanging around, than I’ve ever seen before. It was really nice. I kinda want to write to the city: “on second thought, please let us keep the sinkhole.”

  2. Enjoy it for now Alai, because once Geary is reduced to 2 lanes in each direction for the BRT traffic is going to be pushed out to the side streets we and our kids walk on. If they built underground both Geary AND side streets would be safer and have less traffic AND transit would be faster.

  3. I know there was some talk a while ago about traffic circles, or something. Maybe one of those could take the place of the sinkhole.

  4. And wouldn’t it be nice if while they were fixing the Lake Street water lines they put all the wiring underground as well!

  5. Tammy, There is no such thing as free underground utilities in SF, even though PG&E ratepayers paid in a monthly fee for undergrounding until PG&E’s “bankruptcy” a little over a decade ago. To have all the overhead wires undergrounded, an entire block’s property owners have to agree to pay a fee, which was roughly $3,000 for a 25 foot lot about 25 years ago. There are probably more ancillary charges from City Hall now.

  6. Does anyone else have a chlorine smell whenever they turn on the tap? I’m a good blocks away and although my pressure and volume has been alright the swimming pool odor has been there since the repairs have been going on…

  7. SFPUC no longer uses chlorine, they use chloramine (which ruins washers and other flexible plumbing fittings much faster than chlorine – drip drip leaky faucets). No difference in my air or water.
