Police Blotter – April 24, 2015

SFPD Richmond District Police Station
Weekly Update 04-24-2015
From Captain Simon Silverman

JOIN THE SFPD:
In this week’s newsletter, you’ll read about two officers on foot chasing down a sex offender who was trying to escape on his bike. We need more people like them who want to keep our city safe and won’t back down from a challenge. Find out more about joining the SFPD at www.sfpdcareers.com.

PAL SANDLOT PROGRAM:
Each Wednesday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM officers from Richmond Station are at Rochambeau Playground (25th & Lake) for games with local kids (middle and elementary school age). It’s an informal, drop in program, so bring the kids by and say hello!

Here are some of the 826 incidents handled by Richmond Station this week:

FELONY HIT & RUN TRAFFIC COLLISION
Fulton & 10th Ave
04-17-2015 3:44 PM
A MUNI bus was eastbound on Fulton when a car going the same direction struck the left rear of the bus. The car fled the scene. Two people on the bus sustained moderate injuries.
Captain’s Note: Fleeing the scene of an injury collision is a felony. This suspect should worry because MUNI vehicles have excellent camera systems covering both the interior and exterior of the bus.

ARREST: THEFT OF A PACKAGE / FELONY WARRANT
Balboa & 33rd Ave
04-17-2015 4:20 PM
A neighbor saw the suspect steal an Amazon package from the front porch of a house. He kept the suspect in sight while another person called 911. Officers detained the suspect and found that he also had a domestic violence warrant for his arrest.
Captain’s Note: Package theft is a common problem throughout the City. Some retailers, such as Amazon, will ship to a nearby business where you can pick up the package. It’s not as convenient, but it may be worth it.

ARREST: SHOPLIFTING / RESISTING ARREST
Geary & 15th Ave
04-19-2015 2:46 AM
The suspect tried to buy beer at the 7-11, but because it was after 2:00 AM the clerk refused to sell it to him. The suspect then walked out of the store with the beer in hand, passing a police sergeant who was on her way into the store. The clerk alerted the sergeant who told the suspect to stop but he tried to get away. He was detained and arrested.
Captain’s Note: Everyone (except maybe this suspect) knows that cops are always stopping by 7-11 in the middle of the night. Two numbers to remember if you need the police are 911 and 7-11.

ROBBERY VIA FORCE
California & Park Presidio
04-20-2015 4:00 PM
The victim was standing at the bus stop when the suspects ran up and ripped her purse from her shoulder knocking her to the ground. The suspects fled to a nearby car.
Suspect 1: White male, 18-20 years old, 6’1” 150 lbs, wearing a black hat and black clothing
Suspect 2: Latino male, 18-20 years old, 6’1” 150 lbs, wearing a black hat and black clothing
Car: 4 door with faded black paint. License plate possibly starts with a 7 and ends with 121

ARREST: VANDALISM /CARRYING A CONCEALED WEAPON
Anza & 5th Ave
04-20-2015 5:36 PM
A person called 911 to report a person with a knife. Officers detained the suspect who was carrying a large concealed knife that he had used to stab the fender of a parked Toyota Corolla. The punctures in the sheet metal of the car will cost thousands to fix.
Captain’s Note: I can’t understand why someone would stab a Corolla – one of the most reliable, economical, unpretentious and least stabbed cars on the road.

HIT & RUN TRAFFIC COLLISION
Fulton & 25th Ave
04-20-2015 6:54 PM
A silver Audi A4 was southbound on 25th Ave when it struck a pole. The occupants got out and ran away. The SFPD received several calls from a person claiming to be the owner of the car and trying to reclaim it. He would not say where he was and dispatchers reported that he sounded like he was stoned.
Captain’s Note: The proximity to 420 events may explain this incident. In that case, a further note to the suspect: Dude… we totally towed your car… bummer.

MENTAL HEALTH CASE
Geary & 17th Ave
04-20-2015 9:54 PM
Officers responded to a report of an agitated person wielding scissors. They detained a woman who was yelling incoherently and appeared to be in crisis. They found a can opener nearby that could have been mistaken for scissors. The woman was taken to the hospital.

MENTAL HEALTH CASE
Balboa & 44th Ave
04-21-2015 7:37 PM
Family members called the SFPD when a loved one expressed increasingly suicidal ideation. The suicidal person was transported to the hospital.

INJURY TRAFFIC COLLISION
Balboa & 42nd Ave
04-21-2015 9:06 PM
A Nissan was southbound on 42nd Ave when it ran a stop sign and collided with a BMW that was eastbound on Balboa resulting in minor injuries to the Nissan driver who was cited at the scene.

ARREST: AUTO BURGLARY / POSSESSION OF STOLEN PROPERTY / VIOLATION OF PROBATION
California & Spruce
04-22-2015 6:05 PM
A woman returned to her parked car to find the suspect sitting in the driver’s seat. The victim yelled for someone to call the police and the suspect ran off. Officers found the suspect in a nearby bus shelter pretending to be asleep. The suspect had property taken from the car in her possession. She was already on probation for vehicle theft and possession of stolen property.

STOLEN CAR / EVADING A POLICE OFFICER
California & Laurel
04-22-2015 11:30 PM
Officers on patrol ran the license plate of a suspicious vehicle and found that it was stolen. They tried to pull over the driver, but he ran a red light and sped off on the wrong side of the road.
Captain’s Note: The SFPD only pursues cars for violent crimes. In this case the officers made the uncomfortable but correct decision let the stolen car go. This policy exists because vehicle pursuits can be dangerous and we do not want to risk anyone getting hurt when the underlying offense is not a violent one.

ARREST: SEX OFFENDER FAILING TO REGISTER / RESISTING ARREST / TRAFFIC VIOLATION
Great Highway & Balboa
04-23-2015 2:52 PM
Officers were on patrol when they saw a person riding his bike the wrong way against traffic on the Great Highway. They tried to stop him, but he fled on his bike with the officers close behind in foot pursuit. He was trying to get away because he was a sex offender who had failed to register with the SFPD for nearly two years.

  1. I love reading this report but I always wonder why people keep their passports in their cars? Planning on a quick escape out of the country???

  2. this makes me want to get myself into the blotter so i can read snarky comments from the captain!

  3. Keep up the good writing, Captain! The Richmond D has experienced a revolving door of Captains: we seem to get a new one every year or two. Hope you stick around for awhile. And I do agree with your description of Corollas. Now, a mental stabbing of a bunch of BMWs and SUVs….well deserved. 🙂

  4. Was the artificial knee still in the person before it was stolen?

  5. “INJURY TRAFFIC COLLISION Arguello & Geary 04-26-2015 5:56 PM
The driver of a Honda struck a tandem bicycle causing injuries to both cyclists. He was cited.”

Capt. Silverman, you forgot to mention that the Honda that hit the bicycle riders on April was an Uber-X. Oops. Why does SFPD routinely omit from reports that vehicles in accidents are TNCs, i.e. Uber-X, Lyft, Sidecar?
