Richmond Station handles over 600 incidents in an average week. Because I can’t include every one of them, I choose items that I hope will educate and inform. Some items are noteworthy because they are unusual, while some are worth noting because they illustrate a common occurrence.

Here are some of the 667 incidents handled by Richmond Station this week:

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY OF A RESIDENCE
05-08-2015 9:55 AM
Presidio & Pacific
The suspect tried to get into a home by breaking a glass door, but was unsuccessful. This case may be related to the one immediately following.
Suspect: Asian male, 25-35 years old, 5’5” thin, wearing a pink T-shirt, red pants and black shoes. The suspect wore thick framed glasses.

BURGLARY OF AN OCCUPIED RESIDENCE
05-08-2015 11:45 AM
Walnut & Pacific
The suspect broke into the home through a window while a woman and a child were inside. He took several items and fled when discovered.
Suspect: Male, 25-30 years old, 5’3” 110 lbs, wearing a white T-shirt with a black design, light grey pants and a reddish belt.

ARREST: FELON IN POSSESSION OF A LOADED FIREARM
05-09-2015 1:35 PM
Stow Lake Drive
Officers from the Richmond undercover unit saw two suspects who were prowling to break into cars. When they detained the suspects, the officers found that one had a loaded pistol. This suspect had a felony conviction for robbery.
Captain’s Note: It is illegal for convicted felons to possess firearms.

ARREST: STOLEN VEHICLE / PROBATION VIOLATION / SUSPENDED LICENSE
05-09-2015 10:34 PM
Euclid & Palm
A night watch sergeant was disturbed by the bright high beams of a car behind him (this is not only annoying, it’s also a vehicle code violation). Upon stopping the car, the sergeant discovered that it was stolen and that two of the people in the car were on probation for grand theft auto (the crime – not the video game). In addition, the driver had a suspended license.
Captain’s Tip for Suspects: When driving a stolen car, try not to flash your high beams at marked police vehicles. Also, if your license is suspended, have a licensed co-conspirator drive the stolen car. You wouldn’t want to get in any trouble, right?

ARREST: ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON
05-10-2015 12:00 PM
Near Fulton & 43rd Ave in Golden Gate Park
Uniformed San Francisco Park Rangers saw the suspect breaking branches off tress and tried to stop him. He attacked them with a thick, heavy tree branch, striking each of them in the head multiple times. They gained control of him and SFPD officers arrived to assist. Both rangers required emergency medical care but are now recovering. This same suspect has been arrested for vandalism in Golden Gate Park several times.

ARREST: THEFT FROM A VEHICLE / PROBATION VIOLATION
05-11-2015 4:00 PM
Fulton & 33rd Ave
Officers from the Richmond undercover unit saw the suspect break into a car. He tried to run for cover inside Golden Gate Park, but they caught him. As he was being handcuffed he blurted out, “I didn’t break into that car!” He was already on probation for burglary, possession of stolen property, and robbery.
Captain’s Note: To paraphrase Shakespeare, “The suspect doth protest too much, methinks.”

TRAFFIC COLLISION WITH INJURY
05-12-2015 2:36 PM
Clement & 15th Ave
The driver of a Lexus was parked when she opened her car door into the path of a passing cyclist causing the cyclist to crash and suffer minor injuries. The driver was cited.
Captain’s Note: The vehicle code says, “No person shall open the door of a vehicle on the side available to moving traffic unless it is reasonably safe to do so…” This common danger for cyclists is known as “dooring.”

ARREST: LEWD CONDUCT / POSSESS HEROIN / POSSESS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA
05-12-2015 7:44 PM
Anza & 14th Ave
Officers were dispatched to a call of a naked man sitting in his car with the door wide open for all to see. Upon arrival, officers saw heroin and drug paraphernalia in the car and observed the suspect clutching his personal paraphernalia.
Captain’s Note: Some people just don’t know how to handle themselves.

BANK ROBBERY WITH A GUN
05-14-2015 12:45 PM
Balboa & 37th Ave
The suspect pointed a gun at tellers and demand money. This same suspect is currently wanted for other bank robberies in San Francisco and elsewhere.
Suspect: Black male, 40s, 6’ medium build, wearing black sunglasses and a black multi-colored sweatshirt.

  1. Captain Silverman, thanks very much for mentioning the law on opening your car door. Getting doored is one my worst fears when biking and it’s a really easy (dumb) thing for drivers to do if they don’t take exactly one split-second to turn their heads!

  2. When I learned to drive eons ago in another state I was told it was illegal to open your door into traffic. You were supposed to slide over (yes, that’s how long ago it was) and exit from the passenger side. Now I see people sitting in their cars with their doors open while cars and bikes squeeze by on the left. I don’t think it ever occurs to them that it’s dangerous to everyone, including themselves. It’s good to see it mentioned here.

  3. Yes, thank you for making this note. As a cyclist, I’ve been doored a few times and it isn’t pretty for either party.

Also, as a driver, remind yourself that some people in SF have REALLY nice bikes. The cost of repairing/replacing these bikes is not cheap.
