JAWS the movie turns 40; see it at the Balboa Tuesday night

Much like my parents’ generation disliked showering alone after seeing Psycho, kids that grew up in the 70’s and 80’s have a fear of open water swimming thanks to the tenacious great white shark in the 1975 classic film, JAWS.

40 years later, it still holds up as one of the most terrifying movies every made – and one of the top grossing with a to-date box office take of $471 million (not to mention its enduring theme music). Great white sharks forever earned the title as badasses of the ocean.

Now is your chance to see it again (for the first time?) on the big screen this Tuesday night at the Balboa Theater at 7:30pm.

Tickets are available online in advance or at the theater box office.

Some fun facts about JAWS:
– The famous line “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” was an ad-lib by Roy Scheider.
– The shark was famously known as Bruce, after director Steven Spielberg’s lawyer, but it’s other nickname was ‘The Great White Turd’ which Spielberg only used when really angry.
– The scheduled 55 days to complete principal photography ballooned to an enormous 159 days.
