#Carmageddon: Doyle Drive closed July 9-13; avoid the Golden Gate Bridge & Park Presidio

Beginning Thursday, July 9 at 10pm, Doyle Drive will be closed completely in both directions until Monday, July 13 at 5am.

During the weekend closure, crews will finalize roadway connections and transfer traffic to the new permanent roadway, including the Main Post Tunnels, northbound Battery Tunnel, northbound High Viaduct and restored connections to Highway 1/Park Presidio.

The only way on and off the Golden Gate Bridge that weekend will be via 19th Avenue / Park Presidio, and through the Presidio – for all motorists. So if you can avoid using the bridge, do. Traffic will be, well, horrible.

The good news is that once the construction is complete, we will finally have our quick access to and from the Marina area of the city again as the connecting on-ramps from Highway 1 to Doyle Drive will finally be open. Hooray!

Find out more about the closure here.

  1. The state this last week was working on Park-Presidio Blvd. It was down to one lane and backed up 1/2 way to the 280. Lets hope that the project managers of this work have bothered to make sure that the any work on Park-Presidio Blvd is put off so that do not compound the traffic mess.

Anyone want to take a bet on them communicating?

As an aside, for many years the road sign when heading off the bridge to the Richmond District said “19th Avenue Via Park Presidio Blvd.” Over the last 10 years it just states “19th Avenue”. Guess what? People get on to Park Presidio and think they took a wrong turn then drive around the hood asking for directions. I asked Caltrans many time to fix it and the request goes into a black hole…

  2. Worth noting that Caltrans plans on allowing motorists to make left turns from southbound Park Presidio onto both California and Geary.

So in addition to Park Presidio being gridlock, both Geary and California will be too. This will also cripple the 1-California and 38-Geary buses (and their rapid/express variants) across the whole city, affecting over 100k bus riders.

Seems ridiculous to me to allow this.. they should just shut down the bridge except to GGT and taxis. The disruption to traffic and buses here affects far more people than the number who drive over the bridge, but I guess this way we all lose.

  3. @Laura – Yes! Thanks for catching the typo. 1pm would truly be Carmageddon!! 🙂

  4. @JD – and I predict problems like that will only be compounded by a level of magnitude thanks to the idiocy of naming the new Doyle Drive “Presidio Parkway” – did not one person think that maybe people would confuse “Presidio Parkway” and “Park Presidio”?!

@Straver – sounds like time for the 31 to shine, LOL. But srsly, maybe Muni should put up flyers directing people to the 31 and the 5 (and should add extra service on both). … of course, if we had the @%(^!# Geary subway, this wouldn’t be a problem…
