Around 3:30pm on Monday afternoon, an 84-year old man drove his Toyota Camry over the edge of the road at the intersection of 48th Avenue and Sutro Heights Boulevard, sending his car tumbling over the cliff into a mess of bushes and power lines.

Firefighters worked quickly to free the man, who was pinned in his totaled car with live power lines laying on top.

The piece of land where the car came to a halt is steep and difficult to access. SFFD trucks parked on 48th Avenue near Balboa to work on the rescue effort, and ran water lines for over a block to reach the victim. PG&E was also called to the scene.

As of 8:55pm last night, they were still working to remove the car from the embankment.

The man was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening neck and back injuries.
