Here are some of the incidents that occurred in the Richmond Police District this week:

ARREST: UNLICENSED DRIVER / WANTED PAROLEE
11/06/2015 10:02 AM
Clement & 3rd Ave
An officer on patrol saw a car with expired registration. He stopped the driver who did not have a valid license. The passenger (who was not wearing his seatbelt) turned out to be a wanted parolee.
Captain’s Note: Sometimes a traffic stop yields more than a citation. The Oklahoma City Federal Building bomber (the late Timothy McVeigh) was caught after being pulled over for speeding.

ARREST: SHOPLIFTING
11/06/2015 8:24 PM
Geary & Masonic
The suspect nicked over $400 worth of razor blades from a store but his escape was cut short when he was pinched by a sharp security guard before he could make a smooth getaway.

ARREST: WARRANT / DRIVING WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE / PROBATION VIOLATION / POSSESSION OF BURGLARY TOOLS / FALSE ID
11/07/2015 4:10 AM
Sutter & Broderick
A sergeant investigating a suspicious parked car found that the registered owner was on probation and had a warrant for auto theft and burglary. Officers watched the car and when the suspect returned to drive off they stopped him. He had a suspended driver’s license and a fake ID in the car along with a couple of crowbars and other tools of his trade.

BURGLARY OF AN OCCUPIED RESIDENCE
11/07/2015 7:15 AM
Anza & 15th Ave
The family was asleep when they heard a noise in the house. They went to check and found that an unknown suspect had stolen several items from the home. Upon closer inspection, they realized that they had not closed and locked the garage door the night before and this is how the suspect gained entry.

ARREST: DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE / HIT & RUN
11/07/2015 4:45 PM
Clement & 7th Ave / Clement & 5th Ave
A drunk driver tried to make a U-Turn at 7th and Clement but hit an occupied parked car. The occupant of the parked car got out to talk to the driver, realized that the driver was intoxicated and called the SFPD. At this point the driver got back in his car and fled the scene, crashing into two other parked cars at 5th & Clement. The driver was arrested for drunk driving once before in 2014.
Captain’s Note: This suspect has been arrested for DUI twice in less than two years, but that doesn’t mean he’s only driven drunk two times.

ARREST: FELONIOUS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ASSAULT
11/07/2015 10:40 PM
Broderick & Post
The suspect assaulted his girlfriend of three years by slamming her into the wall, choking her, head butting her, punching her, and shoving her.
Captain’s Note: A reader recently objected to the use of the term “domestic violence” because she felt that the word “domestic” somehow lessened the seriousness of the crime. On the contrary, for police officers and others in the criminal justice system the term “domestic violence” actually signifies an enhanced investigatory and prosecutorial response with increased penalties upon conviction.

BURGLARY
11/08/2015 3:00 PM to 11/09/2015 6:30 AM
California & 15th Ave
An unknown suspect entered a residential garage and stole two bikes. It is possible that the garage door was not closed or that the suspect used the garage door opener that was kept in the victim’s unlocked vehicle (parked in front of the residence).
Captain’s Note: There are a few crime prevention pointers to be gained from this victim’s loss.
Make sure the doors to your house and car are closed and locked
Don’t leave the garage door opener in the car – especially if it is parked near the house
Lock your bicycles – even in the garage.

ROBBERY
11/08/2015 11:54 pm
Post & Lyon
The victim was smoking on her front steps when the suspects came up and asked her for a cigarette (which she kindly gave them). They then asked her for the time and as she took out her phone to check, one of the suspects slapped the phone from her hand. As the victim reached down to pick up her phone another suspect ran off with her purse. The victim pursued the purse snatcher but tripped. Yet another suspect grabbed her phone as she fell.
Suspect 1: Black female, 17-21 years old, 5’9” 160 lbs, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt. Suspect had a tattoo on her right hand
Suspect 2: Asian male, 17-21 years old, 5’3” 110 lbs, wearing a green hooded sweatshirt and glasses. Suspect had a tattoo on his left hand.
Suspect 3: Asian male, 20-25 years old, 5’9” 160 lbs, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, a tan beanie and glasses.

MENTAL HEALTH CALL
11/09/2015 3:59 PM
Cabrillo & 12th Ave
A person called 911 after receiving a phone call from a depressed friend who had just taken a large number of pills. Officers met with the depressed woman who was initially uncooperative. Through gentle persistence, they were able to determine that she had taken several days’ worth of her prescribed medication all at once. They summoned paramedics who took her to the hospital. In the meantime, officers arranged for the woman’s friend to come and take care of her dog.
Captain’s Note: Much of what SFPD officers do involves helping people outside of what one typically thinks of as law enforcement.

ARREST: PUBLIC INTOXICATION / ASSAULTING A POLICE OFFICER / WARRANTS 11/09/2015 7:51 PM
Geary & 14th Ave
Officers responded to multiple calls regarding an intoxicated man who was throwing bottles and kicking doors. Upon arrival, they recognized the suspect as an experienced boxer and martial artist with a history of assaulting officers. As they were trying to calm the suspect down, he threw a half eaten sandwich at them. He then fought their attempts to handcuff him and threatened that he would kill them the next time he saw them. He refused to get into the police car, and once inside, he kicked violently at the car door and banged his head against the shield that separates the front and rear of the car.
Captain’s Note: If you’ve ever wondered why that shield is there, now you know.

TRAFFIC COLLISION WITH INJURY
11/10/2015 8:41 AM
Geary & 19th Ave
A Toyota was turning from southbound 19th Ave to eastbound Geary when it struck a pedestrian who was crossing Geary in the east crosswalk resulting in minor injuries. The driver was cited at the scene.
Captain’s Note: Drivers must be especially attentive to pedestrians while making turning movements at intersections.

ARREST: PUBLIC INTOXICATION / ASSAULTING A POLICE OFFICER
11/10/2015 8:22 PM
Clement & 32nd Ave
Officers responded to a restaurant regarding an intoxicated man who was refusing to leave. He was unable to walk or stand without assistance and had no plan for getting home safely. He became belligerent and uncooperative with the officers at which point they arrested him. As they were putting him into the back of the police car, he kicked one officer in the leg.
Captain’s Note: It’s a misdemeanor for a person to be in any public place while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and in such a condition that he is unable to exercise care for his own safety or the safety of others.

MENTAL HEALTH CALL
11/11/2015 10:36 AM
Palm & Euclid
A distraught man tried (unsuccessfully) to light his apartment on fire. He fled, leaving a suicide note behind. As officers were searching for him, a nearby restaurant called to report a man bleeding from self inflicted knife wounds in their bathroom. Paramedics took him to the hospital.
