Recent incidents from the Richmond Police District:

BURGLARY
01/08/2016 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM
Seal Rock & El Camino Del Mar
When the resident returned home, he found his window open and some valuables missing. He believes that he didn’t close the window forcefully enough for it to latch and the suspect slid it open.
Captain’s Note: Burglars prowl through neighborhoods looking for unlocked doors and windows. Usually, they seek the path of least resistance. If your home is closed up tight, they may move on in search of an easier target.

ARREST: PUBLIC INTOXICATION / RESISTING ARREST
01/09/2016 2:00 AM
Clement & 25th Ave
A Lyft driver called the SFPD after an intoxicated passenger refused to get out of the car. When officers tried to rouse the passenger, he told them to go away (his exact wording was more anatomically oriented). He struggled with officers, tried to run away, and was ultimately handcuffed. Once safely detained, he calmed down and apologized.

ARREST: DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE
01/09/2016 5:11 AM
Geary & Cook
A USF public safety officer saw a car stopped in a traffic lane on Geary Blvd. The driver was passed out behind the wheel and there was a half empty 24 ounce can of beer in the cup holder (a good defense attorney might argue that the can was half full). SFPD officers responded and conducted field sobriety tests. Although the driver denied drinking, his blood alcohol content was well over double the legal limit.

ARREST: PASSING A STOLEN CHECK / RESISTING ARREST
01/09/2016 11:25 AM
California & Presidio
The suspect tried to cash a check at the credit union. However, the account had been flagged since the checks were stolen in a burglary just a few days earlier. The credit union called the SFPD and stalled the suspect. As soon as he saw officers arriving, the suspect ran off leading the officers on a foot pursuit with him jumping over fences, going through back yards, taking off his jacket and finally being caught. Once in handcuffs, he complained that he was having trouble breathing so he was taken to the hospital before being booked.
Captain’s Note: Although it’s a good bet that the fit 27 year old suspect was short of breath because he ran from the police, we are obligated to get him medical attention. Once someone is in our custody, we are responsible for their well being. The suspect also had a warrant for vehicle theft and he’s on probation for stealing cars in San Mateo County.

ROBBERY
01/09/2016 9:15 PM
Geary & Park Presidio (aboard a MUNI bus)
The victim (a 14 year old boy) was riding the bus and was disturbed by another passenger who was rapping loudly. (For less hip readers like me, in this case “rapping” refers to spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics as opposed to knocking on a solid object). The victim asked the suspect to quiet down at which point the suspect pulled out a knife, threatened the victim and stole his shoes and mobile phone. The suspect then got off the bus and fled.
Suspect: Latino male, 20 years old, 5’5” 150 lbs, wearing a black hat with the number 57 on it, a grey hooded sweatshirt, and grey baggy sweat pants
Carrying a grey and yellow backpack and a skateboard
Armed with a knife with a reddish purple handle

THEFT FROM A STORE
01/10/2016 10:30 AM
Geary & 26th Ave
This crime occurred in a church book store. The suspect waited until everyone was at mass, then pried open the cash register and took out the money. At one point he noticed the store’s video camera, walked over to it, and turned it away from him.
Suspect: White male, 45-50 years old, very thin, wearing a dark blazer
Captain’s Note: Although the saying goes, “The Lord helps those who help themselves” I’m not sure that goes for those helping themselves to the cash register.

FRAUD
01/12/2016 5:45 PM
Geary & 35th Ave
A resident reported that two young women came to his door claiming to be selling magazine subscriptions in support of a charitable organization. After they left (with his check in hand) he Googled the charity and the supposed magazine company and realized that he had been scammed. He promptly cancelled his check.
Captain’s Note: Very few legitimate charitable organizations still engage in door to door fundraising. I advise against opening your door to strangers trying to sell things. Often, this will be a scam or a ruse to gain entry and steal from the house.

ROBBERY
01/14/2016 10:58 AM
Stow Lake near MLK Drive
The victim was walking around the lake and taking pictures with his camera when the suspects approached him. Suspect #1 punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground. This suspect then grabbed the victim’s camera and got into a nearby parked car along with suspect #2.
Suspect #1: Black male 25-35, 5’8” 215 lbs with an athletic build, wearing all dark clothing
Suspect #2: Black male 25-35, 5’8” 230 lbs with a heavy build, wearing all dark clothing
Suspect Car: White Dodge Charger with North Carolina license plates.

THEFT
01/14/2016 3:55 PM
Anza & 9th Ave
The suspect prowled around the school building and stole a laptop and a phone from an office.
Suspect: Black male, 30-35, 5’10” 180 lbs, wearing a blue wool cap a white puffy ski jacket and dark pants
