blotterSFPD Richmond District Police Station Update
01-29-2016
From Captain Simon Silverman

Recent incidents from the Richmond Police District:

ATTEMPTED THEFT FROM A VEHICLE
01/20/2016 3:00 PM
Geary & 9th Ave
A parent picking up her child from school saw four suspicious people walking through a parking lot and trying the door handles of cars. The suspects all got into a car and drove off. The parent used her phone to take a photo of the car. She e-mailed the photo to the school principal who called the SFPD after he received it the next day.
Captain’s Note: This is the kind of suspicious activity that merits an immediate call to the police.

TRAFFIC COLLISION
01/21/2016 5:49 PM
Fulton & Arguello
A mother was pushing her three year old in a stroller across Fulton in the west crosswalk at Arguello. A car turning from southbound Arguello to westbound Fulton hit the stroller, dragged it a short distance and knocked it on its side. Amazingly, no one was hurt. The driver was cited at the scene.
Captain’s Note: In October, we had a similar collision which resulted in severe injuries to a child. Many collisions where pedestrians are hit in a crosswalk involve drivers who are making turning movements. I suspect that they are looking at oncoming traffic and not paying attention to the pedestrian in front of them.

ROBBERY
01/21/2016 8:10 PM
California & 19th Ave
The victim was walking when the suspect suddenly appeared in front of her, pointed a gun at her, took her phone and bag and told her to walk away.
Suspect: Black male, 20-30 years old, 5’8” 150 lbs, wearing a dark wool beanie and dark clothing. Armed with a dark colored semi-automatic pistol

MENTAL HEALTH CASE
01/21/2016 10:29 PM
Clement & 34th Ave
Officers responded to a report of a person yelling, holding a metal pipe and throwing things around. They found the man inside of his apartment shouting at his girlfriend. Officers tried to calm him and get him to cooperate with them but he refused and they had to physically restrain him. The man appeared to be in an altered mental state and was taken to the hospital by paramedics.

TRAFFIC COLLISION WITH INJURIES
01/22/2016 1:00 AM
The Great Highway & JFK
A woman was driving her Toyota south on The Great Highway when she fell asleep and collided with a light pole, knocking it down. She suffered minor injuries.

ARREST: TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS / FALSE ID / RESISTING ARREST / METHAMPHETAMINE POSSESSION / PROBATION VIOLATION / WARRANTS
01/25/2016 2:57 AM
Geary & 2nd Ave
Officers on patrol saw a man riding a bike the wrong way in traffic without a bike light. They stopped to cite him and he gave a fake name. Unluckily for him, the name he gave had warrants associated with it. As the officers went to handcuff him, he rode off leading the officers on a brief pursuit. Once he was arrested, officers found meth and a meth pipe in his pocket. He also had arrest warrants under his real name and was on probation for possession of methamphetamine.

ARREST: STOLEN, LOADED, CONCEALED FIREARM / POSSESSION OF DRUGS FOR SALE / VIOLATION OF PROBATION
01/26/2016 12:57 PM
Point Lobos & Merrie Way
Officers on patrol saw two people sitting in a car and smoking marijuana (a potential violation of vehicle code section 23222(b)). Neither person had a medical marijuana recommendation. One of them was on probation and a condition of his probation required him to submit to search without a warrant (this extends to his residence). A search of his backpack yielded a concealed, loaded, stolen Walther semi-automatic pistol and a large quantity of marijuana. Officers went to his home where they discovered more marijuana, Ecstasy, Xanax, a scale and baggies for packaging the drugs. The suspect was on probation for carrying a loaded, concealed firearm in a vehicle.

SCAM
01/26/2016 2:30 PM
Cabrillo & 40th Ave
The victim received a call from the suspect who used the name “Dave Sayer” and asked her why she had not claimed her $1 million dollar prize from the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. He asked the victim for her bank account and social security numbers so that he could deposit the money. Later, she realized that she had been scammed and was able to close her account before suffering any loss.
Captain’s Note: “Dave Sayer” is the name of an actual Prize Patrol spokesman for Publisher’s Clearing House and it’s likely that the suspect used this name to appear legitimate. PCH has a section of their website that explains scams http://info.pch.com/consumer-information/fraud-protection.

THEFT
01/26/2015 6:30 PM
Masonic & Geary
While shopping, the victim left her purse unattended in the cart for brief periods. She later discovered that her wallet had been stolen from the purse after the thief charged over $2000 on her credit cards.
Captain’s Note: Never leave valuables unattended in a shopping cart. Thieves prowl stores waiting for you to step away for just a second. We often get good pictures from store security cameras, but the store where this occurred has chosen not to use security cameras (unlike nearly every other large grocery store in San Francisco). I would not be surprised if criminals have figured this out since there have been a few identical thefts at this same store.

ARREST: WANTED PAROLEE
01/28/2016 10:48 PM
Anza & 41st Ave
Officers were dispatched to a report of a suspicious person walking back and forth and mumbling. They detained the suspect who claimed to live in the neighborhood (he did not). A records check revealed that he was a wanted parolee. The suspect has an extensive arrest record dating back to the 1970’s that includes charges for pimping (now called human trafficking), carrying a concealed weapon, robbery, rape and murder.

ARREST: BURGLARY / POSSESSION OF BURGLARY TOOLS / POSSESSION OF STOLEN PROPERTY / VIOLATION OF PROBATION
01/28/2016 11:17 PM
California & 28th Ave
Officers responded to an alarm at a nursery school. They caught the suspect coming out of the school with stolen property in his hands. He had an extensive collection of tools including screwdrivers, a wrench, tin snips, a hammer, vice grips, and a drill. He was already on probation for possession of stolen property.

  1. Re. the Fulton and Arguello incident, sad to say but as a pedestrian it’s good to be ultra vigilant. People turning right on a red light or from a stop sign are often looking left for oncoming traffic and completely ignore the crosswalk they’re turning in to. Before I started being extra cautious in those situations I had a couple of close calls having to literally dive out of the way of someone blowing through a red light or stop sign. Be careful out there !

  2. What about the drunk driver who flipped his car on Fulton and 25th and walked away from the scene? I believe this happened the morning of 1/28…

  3. I’m interested in that 1/28 accident as well. Wondering why that didn’t get a mention.

  4. K Hicks & DK2463, These incidents amount to about 2% of the police calls our Richmond District Station goes to each week.
