Recent incidents from the Richmond Police District:

BURGLARY OF A GARAGE / VEHICLE THEFT
01/29/2016 8:00 PM to 01/30/2016 8:00 AM
Anza & 21st Ave
The suspect entered the garage through an unlocked side door and rummaged through three cars stealing several items. The suspect then stole a Honda Fit. The victim often leaves the keys in the Honda which is probably how the Fit was stolen.

BURGLARY OF A RESIDENCE
01/30/2016 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM
Anza & 17th Ave
The victim left her house for a few hours but did not lock the door because her husband was home. Upon her return she discovered the burglary. Her husband had been in the back of the home and did not hear the stealthy suspect.
Captain’s Note: Spouses may wish to insert the comment of their choice about how husbands never hear anything. In fairness to the husband in this case, it is common for a quiet thief to go undetected.

BIKE THEFT
01/31/2016 2:30 PM
Geary & 25th Ave
The victim locked his bike up in front of a store using a cable lock. When he returned 15 minutes later the bike was gone.
Captain’s Note: Cable locks are ineffective because they can be cut quickly and easily. I recommend using a high quality U shaped lock. For more information on good locking techniques visit the SF Bicycle Coalition’s page: https://www.sfbike.org/resources/theft-locking/

ROBBERY
02/02/2016 3:55 PM
Fulton & Funston (inside Golden Gate Park)
The suspect approached the victim, threatened her with a knife and took her ring.
Suspect: Asian male, 28-33 years old, 5’8” 175 lbs, wearing a blue baseball cap, black zip up jacket and blue jeans.

ARREST: DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND DRUGS / SUSPENDED LICENSE
02/03/2016 12:36 AM
Balboa & 26th Ave
Officers on patrol saw a Scion run two stop signs. They stopped the driver who was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. His driver’s license was suspended.
Captain’s Note: The suspect’s license suspension was the result of a previous DUI arrest in October 2015. In that incident, he sped past a marked patrol car… oops.

TRAFFIC COLLISION WITH INJURIES
02/03/2016 9:20 PM
JFK & Tea Garden Drive (Golden Gate Park)
The driver of a Nissan was west bound on JFK at about 30 MPH when he crashed into the rear of a Honda that was stopped at a stop sign. The driver told officers that he was suffering from jet lag and had dozed off. Both drivers sustained minor injuries. The Nissan driver was cited at the scene.
Captain’s Note: As we see here, DWD (driving while drowsy) is dangerous. According to a study by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, opening the windows or playing loud music are not effective countermeasures. The safest option is to pull over and stop driving.

MENTAL HEALTH CASE
02/04/2016 12:25 AM
Anza & 11th Ave
A concerned neighbor called the SFPD to check on the man next door. Officers found that there was no furniture, food or other necessities in the home. The man was half naked and complained of hearing voices. Officers got him some clothes from the station and took him to the hospital.

ARREST: THREATS / BRANDISHING A KNIFE
02/04/2016 7:16 AM
Lake & 17th Ave
A construction crew has been having an ongoing problem with an unauthorized stranger locking himself inside their portable toilet. On this morning, he locked himself inside for a long time while the workers repeatedly asked him to leave (one assumes with increasing urgency). After he finally came out, the suspect brandished a knife at the construction foreman and threatened him. The foreman called the SFPD and officers arrested the suspect as he fled the scene.

ARREST: POSSESSION OF METHAMPHETAMINE
02/04/2016 6:15 PM
Clement & 8th Ave
A sergeant on patrol saw the suspect intently studying the video surveillance system at a local business. The sergeant detained the suspect who is on probation for grand theft and has an extensive criminal history for violence, theft and drugs. As a condition of his probation, he is required to submit to warrantless search. A check of his backpack yielded nearly 4 grams of crystal meth.
Captain’s Note: With the passage of proposition 47, possession of methamphetamine for personal use is now a misdemeanor. Therefore, this suspect was released at the scene with a citation instead of being booked into county jail.

One Comment

  1. One thing I have noticed for a long time in the plotting of the crimes on the crime map, which I know is subcontracted and not directly run by SFPD, is that the data does not tell on car theft it the car was parked in a garage, car port, driveway, or on the street.
I would like to see the data, on the city wide crime map, reflect if a car was stolen by breaking into a garage, like this weeks blotter shows and those that were stolen from the street.
