[Captain Simon Silverman’s final] Police Blotter – March 11, 2016

blotterSFPD Richmond District Police Station Update
03-11-2016
From Captain Simon Silverman

The Police Commission will hold a Special Meeting in the Richmond District:
Wed 03/16/2016 6:00 PM at 3200 California Street Room #206 (The Jewish Community Center)
The Commission will hear comments from the public and Richmond Station regarding public protection issues in the Richmond Police District.

Recent incidents from the Richmond Police District:

MEDICAL CALL
03/05/2016 2:13 AM
Park Presidio & Cabrillo
Officers responded to a 911 call regarding a man covered in blood walking in traffic. They found the shirtless, disoriented and confused victim on the street. He had a number of lacerations and puncture wounds on his body and was bleeding profusely. He told officers that he had taken “acid” (LSD) and did not know how he had been injured. Officers went to his nearby home where they found a blood trail leading to the broken window of a room where his girlfriend was sleeping soundly. She also had no explanation for what had happened. It appears likely that the victim crashed through his own window causing his injuries.
Captain’s Note: Shel Silverstein said, “When the light turns green, you go. When the light turns red, you stop. But what do you do when the light turns blue with orange and lavender spots?”

MENTAL HEALTH CASE
03/06/2016 5:08 PM
Fulton & 18th Ave
A woman called 911 saying that she was suicidal and about to cut her head open to get rid of the bad spirit that had entered her mind. Officers took her to the hospital.
Captain’s Note: Regular readers may recognize that this is the same person who has been taken to the hospital by officers (and then quickly released by the hospital) under similar circumstances a number of times. For those keeping score at home, this was incident number 55 since 2012.

SHOOTING AT AN INHABITED DWELLING
03/06/2016 12:05 -12:25 AM
Balboa & 12th Ave and Anza & Almaden
The suspect fired several handgun rounds. Miraculously, no one was hurt. There is a particular suspect and we do not believe that the targets were randomly selected. This case remains under investigation.

BURGLARY OF A BUSINESS
03/07/2016 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM
Sacramento & Lyon
A cat burglar entered a pet boarding business through an unlocked window and stole cash.
Captain’s Note: Several feline guests were present during the crime but were unhurt. They did not give statements (perhaps the cat has got their tongue).

ARREST: DRIVING WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE
03/09/2016 2:15 AM
Geary & Park Presidio
An officer on patrol saw the suspect driving along and immediately recognized him because she had arrested him twice in the last six months for drunk driving and driving with a suspended license. She stopped him and arrested him for driving on a suspended license, again.
Captain’s Note: At least he wasn’t drunk this time… that’s progress, right?

ARREST: DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE
03/11/2016 3:15 AM
Geary & 17th Ave
Officers on patrol saw a Mercedes stopped in the middle of the intersection with the engine running. There was one person asleep in the driver’s seat and another in the front passenger’s seat. The officers managed to wake up the passenger, who eventually shook the driver awake. The driver (who was intoxicated and already on probation for DUI) claimed that he had not been driving, but was rather a passenger in the rear seat. He had no explanation for how he ended up behind the wheel.

Change of Command:
All good things must come to an end and Friday March 11 is my last day at Richmond Station. I am transferring to the Field Operations Bureau where I will be one of the captains supervising citywide patrol operations during the overnight hours. I am very grateful for all of the community support that made my time here a wonderful experience.

Captain Paul Yep will be assuming command and I am pleased to be leaving the district in his very capable hands.

We will both be at the Police Commission meeting at the JCC Wed 03/16/2016 (see above) so come and say hello / goodbye.

  1. Noooooo – I’ve been so addicted to his blotters! Captain Silverman will be missed!

  2. Ditto! Capt. Yep – I sure do hope you can bring a little humor to a very trying subject matter like #55 up there ^.
What a wonderful use of police resources. You’d think after IDK #40 there might be a way to address the situation further by hospital or city. Yeesh.

  3. I second Balboagal/Anon’s posts. Use of the Shel Silverstein quote–inspired! Now that you’ll be supervising citywide patrol operations, please keep (or better yet, increase) the speed patrols out here. Forgive my naïveté, but couldn’t recruiting be stepped up? More cops=more tickets that could pay their salaries and then some. The influx of transplants has resulted in more speeding cars, more injured/killed pedestrians, and more bicyclists blasting through stop signs and getting hit by cars. Help! Missing you already.

  4. Captain Silverman’s blotter posts injected with humor, help demonstrate that police are people too. That is one kind of important community outreach that touches people. Done nicely.
Best of luck to you sir.
    Three cheers for Captain Silverman!!!

  5. Best captain of “Club Richmond”, ever! Thanks so much for the levity and efficiency. Hopefully your replacement will follow suit!

  6. Thank you for serving our community, and best of luck in your new role. Your blotter commentary will be missed!

  7. Captain Silverman your wit will be truly missed. How is Captain Yep at at humorous quips?

  8. Captain Silverman, your blotter always made me chuckle during my morning commute on Muni. You will most likely be too busy to maintain a blog while handling overnight patrol operations, but if you do continue writing, do let us know where to find it. Congrats on the new position.

And welcome Captain Paul Yep. Looking forward to reading your continuation of the blotter.

  9. Thanks so much Captain Silverman. Your humor, in light of pretty scary events (at least to those of us who haven’t participated in actual crimes), has made the department more “accessible.” You’ll be missed

  10. ” For those keeping score at home, this was incident number 55 since 2012. ”

And you (the SFPD) are violating her medical privacy because…. why exactly?

    Shameful.
