Weekly Update 05-05-2016

From Captain Paul Yep:

Great News! As I am writing this newsletter, your Richmond Police Station officers have just made an outstanding arrest of a Burglary/Hot Prowl suspect! The officers are now working diligently on the investigation. Read more about the details at the end of this newsletter.

Thank you to all the community members who met with me for “Coffee with the Captain”. At this point I think I have enough caffeine in my system to last me to the end of the year. I truly appreciated all of your comments, input and time. And mostly I just enjoyed our candid conversations. I learned a lot about your concerns regarding our partnership in public safety. A few common themes that were discussed at the meetings were property crimes, traffic safety and the homeless.

I hope everyone has noticed the increased presence of our Richmond Station motorcycle traffic officers in the district. They have been active trying to keep our streets safe for all pedestrians, bicyclist and motor vehicles.

I have also been working to refine the Richmond District’s plans for the upcoming Bay to Breakers event on Sunday, May 15, 2016. Please plan ahead and expect a few traffic and crowd issues that morning. The event went very well for us last year and we expect the same this year.

Next community meeting:

Officers observed a man riding a mini motorcycle without a helmet on, a violation of the California Vehicle Code. Officers stopped the man and ran a computer check which revealed he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. When Officers ran the VIN number on the motorcycle, it came back as a stolen vehicle out of San Francisco. Officers then placed the suspect under arrest. When Officers performed an arrest search on the suspect, they located a United States Postal key, which can be used to steal US Mail, in his right front pocket. The man was booked on several felony charges.

MALICIOUS MISCHIEF VANDALISM TO A VEHICLE
04/29/2016
Clement St. & 28th Ave.
Officers responded to a possible auto burglary in progress. When Officers arrived they located a vehicle with several large dents on the roof, dents on the side of the vehicle, a broken side mirror and a shattered windshield. Officers spoke with a witness who saw a man jumping on and kicking the vehicle. When the witness slowed to see what was going on the man threatened him. The victim was able to take a picture of the suspect. Officers located the vehicle’s owner who told Officers no one had permission to damage his vehicle. When the vehicle’s owner saw the picture of the suspect, he told Officers that was a man who had been interested in buying his vehicle and he had no clue why he would want to damage it. Officers searched the area for the suspect but were unable to locate him at that time.
Suspect description: White male, 48 years old, 5’10’, 170 lbs, brown hair and blue eyes.

Officers were also advised a victim was being treated for facial injuries from falling off her bicycle after she had been hit by the man as he was fleeing the CVS. A computer check of the man revealed a felony no bail warrant for his arrest. The suspect was arrested for shoplifting and booked on the warrant at County Jail.

When the victim went to investigate the noise he saw a man riding away on his mountain bike. When Officers arrived on scene they were unable to locate the suspect but they received a description of both the suspect and the bike he stole.

On 05/05/2016 at 07:00 AM an Officer who responded to the hot prowl burglary was off duty and driving home from work. The Officer observed what appeared to be the suspect riding the stolen bicycle. The victim was notified and positively identified the bike in question as his own. The victim also positively identified the suspect as the man he saw inside his home. The suspect was booked on several felony charges including: burglary, a felony no bail warrant, and possession of methamphetamine.
