Burma Superstar kitchen workers suing restaurant group over payment practices

burma

The Chronicle reported today that current and former workers at Burma Superstar have filed a lawsuit against the owners of the restaurant chain “alleging the restaurant chain stiffed workers on wages, overtime pay, breaks and sick leave.”

“Burma Superstar kitchen workers work very hard to make the restaurants so successful,” said William Navarrete, a former dishwasher and cook at three Burma Superstar restaurants. “We believe they did not pay us what we were owed.”

The suit was filed on behalf of three employees and around 100 “similarly situated” workers by attorneys with the Asian Law Caucus, and Centro Legal de la Raza. The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified back pay, attorney’s fees, and other penalties.

The Burma Superstar restaurant groups operates three restaurants on Clement Street – Burma Superstar, B Star, and Eats – as well as restaurants in Alameda and Oakland. They are also planning to open another spot in the mid-Market area.

Their original location at 309 Clement Street opened in 1992.

  1. Haven’t been to BS on Clement since the never-explained EColi outbreak there in 2013 that put several people in the hospital. And now some alleged sleazy treatment of employees. Jeez, what a classy joint!

  2. Such an over-rated restaurant, I laugh every time I see the crowds waiting. Mandalay on California has been far better for the last decade.

  3. For those of you who want excellent Burmese food that’s not pricey and little to no wait, go to Burmese Kitchen on Geary and 3rd. Once I went there, there’s was no going back to Burma Superstar.
