Here are some of the incidents that occurred in the Richmond Police District this week:

FRAUDULENT GAME OR TRICK TO OBTAIN MONEY OR PROPERTY
09/10/2016 10:40 AM
23RD AVE & GEARY BLVD
The victim received a telephone call from the suspect, who claimed to be the victim’s close relative. The suspect told the victim they had been arrested for narcotics possession in Las Vegas. The suspect then gave the phone to another suspect, who claimed to be an attorney in Nevada. This suspect instructed the victim to wire transfer $10,000 to a bank account. The victim wired the money.

Unfortunately this incident does not end there.

The next day, the victim received another phone call from the “attorney.” This time, he instructed the victim to wire transfer $15,000 so the victim’s relative could return home. The victim wired the money again.

The victim eventually contacted her relative and learned that he had not been arrested. The victim filed a police report, but not before being cheated out of $25,000!

Several similar incidents have been reported recently. Please share these stories, particularly with elderly relatives, so that they do not fall victim to similar scams.

ROBBERY WITH A GUN
09/10/2016 8:45 PM
GEARY BLVD & COLLINS ST
While waiting for a bus, the victim was approached by three suspects. The suspects and the victim engaged in a brief conversation, which concluded with the suspects asking the victim for a cigarette. When the victim informed the suspects that he did not have any cigarettes, one of the suspects pulled out a gun, described as a revolver, from his jacket pocket and pointed it at the victim.
The suspects stole the victim’s cell phone and a packet of tobacco, and then left the area. The victim was not injured during this incident.

The suspects were described as:
1. Black male 20-25 years of age, 6’1” and 185 lbs., hair in two braids that run down his chest, wearing all red clothing.
2. Hispanic female in her 20s, 5’4” and 130 lbs., long straight dark hair, wearing a white t-shirt and light blue jeans.
3. White male in his 20s, 5’10” and 170 lbs., short brown hair, wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.

ARREST: BRANDISHING A FIREARM; CARRYING A CONCEALED FIREARM; BATTERY
09/10/2016 11:05 PM
GEARY BLVD & 3RD AVE
A suspect was observed carrying a firearm in public, in front of a popular Richmond bar. Officers responded and searched the area, quickly locating the suspect. Officers searched the suspect, but were unable to locate any firearm. Witness provided information to Officers that there may be additional people involved.
Officers located a friend of the suspect, who was reportedly also involved in the incident. The friend was also searched for the alleged firearm, but she did not have it either. However, through thorough investigation, the firearm was soon located in a planter box on Geary Blvd.
A victim approached Officers on scene and claimed that the suspect had assaulted him inside the bar.
The suspect was booked at County Jail on numerous charges.

ARREST: INVESTIGATIVE DETENTION; RESISTING, DELAYING, OR OBSTRUCTING PEACE OFFICER DUTIES
09/11/2016 4:40 PM
850 LA PLAYA ST
After a 911 call was received regarding suspects shooting a bow and arrow at people, Officers responded to the area. Suspects matching the provided description, one of whom was conspicuously holding an archery bow, were located in the Safeway parking lot. While attempting to detain the suspects to investigate the incident, two of the suspects were compliant and followed the Officer’s instructions. The third was not compliant and attempted to walk away from Officers.
Reasonable force was used to gain this suspect’s compliance, and he was subsequently cited for resisting Officers.
Fortunately nobody was hurt by these individuals, and no damage to property was observed.

ROBBERY, COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENT WITH A KNIFE
09/11/2016 7:11 PM
BALBOA ST & 26TH AVE
Richmond Officers responded to a report of a robbery in which the suspect had a knife. They met with the victim, who thankfully was not injured during the incident.
The victim told Officers that the suspect brandished a knife and asked where they kept the money. The victim indicated that the money was in the register. The suspect then pushed the victim to the ground and stole approximately $300 from the register. The suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle.
Officers were unable to locate the suspect and the investigation is ongoing. The suspect is described as a black or Hispanic male between 20 and 30 years of age. He is described as being approximately 5’10” tall and 140 lbs, and wearing all black clothing including a black face mask and gloves.

BURGLARY, STORE, FORCIBLE ENTRY
09/12/2016 1:30 AM
CLEMENT ST & ARGUELLO BLVD
The sound of broken glass and an alarm sounding prompted a 911 call in the early morning hours. Officers responded and found the glass front door to the business broken, but the suspect had already fled the scene. It appeared that the suspect had entered the store and taken items from inside.
Officers spoke with a witness and searched the area for a suspect. Unfortunately the perpetrator eluded the Officers on this occasion.
Once the business owner arrived on scene, it was estimated that the suspect had stolen merchandise valued at approximately $45,000.
A limited suspect description was provided and the investigation is ongoing.

ARREST: CARJACKING WITH A GUN; AGGRAVATED ASSAULT ON A POLICE OFFICER; EVADING A POLICE OFFICER
09/14/2016 3:00 AM
CLEMENT ST & 24TH AVE
An Uber driver was taking a break when he was approached by three unknown male suspects. One of the suspects reached into his backpack, lifted the backpack up, and pointed it toward the victim. The victim believed the suspect had a gun inside the backpack.
The suspects stole the victim’s vehicle and left the area. The victim called 911 from a nearby business, but the suspects were gone prior to Richmond Officers arriving on scene.
A short time later, a Northern District Officer observed the stolen vehicle driving, and attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspect did not stop and Officers pursued the vehicle. During the incident, the suspects attempted to hit Officers with their vehicle, and collided with a police vehicle.
The incident ended when the suspect’s vehicle lost control and hit a light pole near AT&T Park. The vehicle was badly damaged and two suspects remained inside the vehicle where they were apprehended by Officers. The third suspect really did not want to go to jail, and attempted to flee the scene on foot. Fortunately Officers were able to quickly apprehend him too.
All suspects were transported to hospital for medical treatment, before being booked into County Jail on numerous charges.

VISION ZERO SF
You may notice increased traffic enforcement in the Richmond District in the coming months. The increased traffic enforcement is a deliberate and focused effort to achieve the goal of Vision Zero SF, zero traffic deaths in San Francisco by 2024. Richmond Officers will be focusing on all elements of traffic enforcement, particularly the top 5 traffic violations that lead to deaths or injuries caused by traffic collisions. These violations are:

– Speeding
– Not yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalk
– Not yielding the right of way to oncoming traffic while making a left turn
– Red light violations
– Stop sign violations

Please drive, bike, or walk safely and be mindful of those who share the road with you. Approximately 100 people are killed or seriously injured in traffic collisions annually in San Francisco. Officers at Richmond Station will be doing their part to make Vision Zero SF’s goal a reality.

  1. A few months back a Prius tried to make a left hand turn at the last minute from the center lane on Sacramento Ave during 5 PM rush hour traffic, FROM THE CENTER LANE, cut me right off and I had nowhere to go, my 500 lbs. motorcycle destroyed the left front quarter panel and driver’s side door, I flew over the hood and landed on the sidewalk, my bike landed in a heap and was totaled, fortunately, I was wearing full safety gear, and walked away with a small minor bruise the size of a nickel on one of my knees, so who cares about the bike when you can ride another day.

I’ve noticed in the past decade that what used to be drivers putting on makeup, or being distracted by loud music, smoking a joint, is now 9/10 someone texting/emailing/face timing on their phone :\

  2. The same scam above has happened to both of my grandparents, from Mother AND Father side.
Same somewhat believable story, one I was in Vegas, another I was in Calgary, Canada, and the last, I was in Bakersfield asking for money because I was in trouble with the law.
Pretty sick that this scam eventually works sometimes and a little terrifying how your information and simple connections can be tracked. Be careful out there, and give your grandparents a call every now and then just to say hi and catch up.
