San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee dead at 65

Mayor Ed Lee gathers with Presidio Middle School students around the $1,000 donation check that Fresh & Easy presented to the Richmond District Neighborhood Center at their 32nd Ave store opening in 2011.

We learned the sad news this morning that our mayor Edwin Lee, passed away after an apparent heart attack on Monday night. Lee was shopping for family groceries at a Safeway in San Francisco when he collapsed and was taken to SF General Hospital where he later died, surrounded by friends and family.

Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to Mayor Lee’s family and to the Board of Supervisors for their loss. Our Supervisor, Sandra Lee Fewer posted this on her Facebook page this morning:

I am heartbroken that Mayor Ed Lee, San Francisco’s first Chinese American mayor, passed away early this morning. Mayor Lee was a tireless public servant, dedicating himself fully to leading San Francisco, and it has been an honor to work with him during my first year in office. He will be greatly missed, and my heart goes out to his wife and daughters during this time. – Sandra Lee Fewer

I never met Mayor Lee personally, but observed him at many events in the Richmond District. He was always friendly, gregarious and very proud of his city and its citizens.

Rest in peace, Mayor Lee.
